The last remaining survivor of the Titanic disaster is auctioning mementoes from the doomed liner to pay for her nursing home fees, she was 2 months old when the ship sank. At the age of 96 she is struggling to make ends meet and hopes to make 3,000 pounds (5,171 dollars) from the sale. Can anyone think of a better solution? This is so sad. There has to be a better way.

I saw that article in the newspaper and thought like you how sad it as to have to selll personal posessions to pay for your care. But this is becoming a much more well known thing, where people are now being asked to sell their homes to fund their care in old age.I do not get the reasoning behind all of this,in our early years they keep telling us how we need to save ,to put way money for our retirement, and take out private pensions,or increase our contributions to our pension schemes and then in the next breath they are saying that all we have saved for will be needed to take care of us in our old age!So it does take the shine off it all doesnt it? If you and your spouse/partner pay into the state all of your working life then surely there should be some form of recompense at the end of the day, money set aside by the government to care for the elderly. The home care services are practically on thier knees, the home carers here in the UK are now so restricted as to what they can do for their clients it has become a joke.Years ago a home carer was allowed to go in and clean ,dust and do any other jobs that needed diong, and now they are not in essence supposed to do any of this, their role is to keep the client `clean and fed and watered`,but what about pride and dignity?if they have been used to sitting in a reasonably clean and tidy abode, then it is going to affect their well being sitting in a tip if they are unable to do the tasks them selves.I hear you say about family and their role in the care of the elderly relatives, but there are many families that are parted by many lies,so only able to meet up on special occasions,it is not everyone who is licky enough to have family near hand.

It is sad that she needs to auction off her mementos in order to pay for her nursing home care. I would think that things like that should stay in the family. In any event, I hope that she is able to earn enough money from the sale to pay for her nursing home care.

That is sad to hear. I wish they were something that could be done to help her. Even though she was a baby at the time of its downfall she is still a piece of history herself. Maybe someone will help her.

I think it is appropriate for her to be able to auction her mementos. I certainly hope she makes some money off of it. A better solution, of course, would be to respectfully take care of the elderly.

We recently watched that movie on TV. My heart breaks everytime I watch it. It was such a tragic event. If I had the money, I would just donate some to her, without buying her precious momentos... although at her age.. what is a momento? She can't take it with her.
