Here in Canada it depends on the situation. Usually at work people are on a first name basis which is really nice because it makes for a better work climate. In Government and Municipal agencies where you go for service or information you are called by your last name, which could be your husband's last name or your maiden name if you did not change your name when you got married. At doctor's and dentist's offices and hospitals sometimes the staff use your first name sometimes your last name. I prefer in those situations to be called Mrs.... since most of the staff is very young and I am old. If a young doctor or medical assistant calls me by my first name I ask them what their first name is. Usually they stop in their tracks and from then on call me Mrs...

HI cuterose, Here in my country we always call people by the first name, but in more polite situations the lastname comes to play.. or there is people that call others only by the job they are doing.. the title better say.. in my case I like that people only call me by my nick name..

Hi! I am from India too! Most of the people call me by my first name but in my college everyone calls me "Pareek"(my surname) instead of "swati". Actually there were other Swati's too so my friends started calling me Pareek and now everyone in the college calls me that. And I like that too ^_^. Even our teachers!
So it;s now like the ones who are close to me call me Pareek and the ones who are a little call me Swati.

I like my first name better... At the doctor's office, they may call me by my last name, or even my kids.. I don't really care for it, but I accept it.. It really does not bother me that much.. I just prefer to be called by a woman's name and not a man's name.. That is all..
