Why Can't I Ever Get A Promotion?!

Everytime there's an opportunity at my job for advancement, I apply & interview, and then don't get it! I don't understand. I'm wondering now if it has to do with me, but its not that I'm under qualified. I have the educational background, on-the-job expertise, and even the social skills to be successful. My boyfriend seems to think it's a racial issue, but it really hurts. How do I get out of this slump? Maybe I just need to suck it up and start looking for another job. Does this happen to anyone else?

Hi there sugaplum21!
There are several reasons why people do not get the promotion they deserve. It happened to me already and I only have one reason in mind as to why this could possibly happen to me. It's obviously because of favoritism. I have noticed that only the people who do everything our boss would say are given the break. Yeah, they do everything which include things that they would otherwise not do. If you think you are not being given the opportunity in your organization but you think you deserve a higher position, why not try your luck in another organization... It might work well for you... Good luck!

Sometimes promotion can be unfair for some employees. Some of them have some friends or people who help them get the position even if they are not qualified. Sad but true, a lot of qualified employee were not promoted because some head of the department favors someone whom they knew personally or a daughter/son of a friend and give the opportunity to them instead of giving it to a qualified employee.

I have not had that problem. Although we are the minority in my country, I know that it exists in a lot of private firms. I was working for the government then and was given equal opportunity for job advancement. They were even considering to give me a promotion before I left the job to look after my daughter.
But there is one thing on my mind right now. Are you prepared to receive more? Have you done the necessary things in life to help you get more money? Have you given money to charity? When you do this, you will find that the money comes back many-fold. Maybe you should try to donate some to charity or soemone you think might need it and see what happens. Just my two cents' worth.

I'm glad to hear someone else out there feels my pain. I'm going through the same thing now. I work for the post office. I'm inside one of those big facilities that process the mail overnight. The thing I hate about my job is that everything is by senority, which is fair for some jobs. They have the jobs that you have place a bid onm which are open to everyone. These positions are awarded by senority. So when you bid on a job posting, you have to hope that anyone bidding on the same position has less senority than you in order to get the job. Then you have the jobs that require special skills. If you think you meet the requirements, you must fill out and submit the application to management. Once they reveiw your application, they will decide which number of applicants are best suited for that position and schedule a bunch of interviews. Itls kind of the same as bidding on a jib that's open to everyone, because you are still competing with other applicants. Now it just comes down to who they want to pick. I have been interviewed for one particular position several times. And I keep getting letters in the mail from management saying "Thank you for your interest in the positon but, blah blah blah!!!!" I think you know how the rest goes. The thing that pisses me off the most is that I was introduced to the manager of the job by someone a few months before I applied for a 2nd time, hopping this would help. I get interviewed by the same person and still didn't get the job. Do you know what it's like to keep getting rejected for the same position over and over? It makes me wanna smack the hell out of the person who decided not to hire me, and I also wanna kill the person that they decided to hire!. I'm at the point where I truly believe there is no room for any kind of career advancement for me at my job. They have all these signs hung up at my job that say equal employee oportunity. That's a load of crap. My current positon is a clerk that has me standind on my feet all night. I've been doing it for 10yrs, and it's not something I wanna do in the future. I think people like us need to get together, kidnap those who are in charge of rejecting us for career andvancement, and have compete with each other to see how badly we can beat the piss out of them!
