Why won't dogs SHUT UP!???

During the earlier portion of the decade, I resided on campus with a medium-sized labrador. In addition to two daily walks, I would also tie him up by the tree in the front lawn so that he could frolic outdoors. EVERY SINGLE TIME a student walked by him, he would incessantly bark at them! No matter what I tried, he would not SHUT UP! It was so frustrating! Not only that, but I think he was racist! I had a white gf that he adored. I got a black gf and he would growl at her like no other! Bottom line.... why do dogs keep barking? And IS THERE A WAY TO SHUT THEM UP without harming them!???

You got a point there... i think that sometimes dogs barks just to show off some guts or whatever. But it is really annoying when they can't stop barking. My dogs can't stop barking when a cat tresspass here. They bark all over the night till they kill it and let all of us at home crazy...
