Can the "Devil Wears Prada" scenario about work vs. life/principle be avoided?

VERY belatedly I managed to watch "The Devil Wears Prada", and I have a question to ask. By the way, don't sneer at me for having watched it so late, it's not my fault my friends bailed out on me at the movie house, or the video shop didn't stack on the CDs. Anyway.... The thing is, is losing your personal life and principles the natural consequence of success at work? I mean, look at Miranda. She's the most powerful woman in that fictional fashion world, and yet she seems to skim through marriages faster than a person at a bookstore and is a real manipulative b_____ to boot. I really don't think that that is what usually happens, but I don't know. What do you think?
