Playing with fire!

Okay a lot here know my love of bonfires, but this is not about them. Instead I want to bring up the process of burning candles. I burn candles for the light at night as well as the scent, and also for helping get rid of cigarette smoke. Now once a candle has burnt a while, there forms a bowl like recess in the candle building up a puiddle of melted wax. I have a tendancy to play with fires of all sorts, candle fire is no different. I will blow out the candle once this bowl forms. Then I pour out the wax into a paper bag etc. I then take a knife and shave the edges off till the edge meets the same height as the wick making the candle smaller but also helping it burn more uniformally. I sometimes will also play with the hot wax. I sometimes pour a small amount into my palm then let it harden a bit, peel it off, then roll into into a ball. Do you do the same thing? Do you just let the candle burn out till it is gone? Do you love playing with hot wax as well?

I always have to play with the wax of a candle if I have them lit, what is it about them that just makes me want to mess about with them! I always used to have fragrant candles on the go but once I had more children I stopped simply because of them.

You just discovered how to give yourself a nail & cuticle conditioning treatment at home! LOL
I love playing with wax but I don't burn candles a lot anymore I use the warmers because I have a bad habit of forgetting about them and we all feel safer with the candle warmers in the house.
Have a great Day!

Hot wax, give it to me baby ah ha ah ha. No seriously used to do this with PA glue too and do exactly the same with candle wax. I have all sorts of candles, but yes I can't help but to play so know where you are coming from on this one. The ones Jill gave you were beautiful, I bet you haven't burnt them. Huggles. Ellie :D

As a child I played with model glue the same way.
Until I ripped a lot of skin from 2 fingertips that is.
Owwww!
I have been tempted to light them.
But I went out and bought more to save the gifts from Jill.

i do love to with the melting candle wax. Even if its hot, I like putting them on my fingertips and peeling them of later. I don't what is it with that just make people play with them. They are just too irresistible not to be played. Even my daughter who is afraid of fire tends to play with them. As to playing with fire, I don't really relish playing with them and avoid them as much as I want to. I see fire as something that is just too unpredictable and accident prone that I avoid playing with it. there were times that it is tempting to play with them specially during brownouts wherein we use candles but I keep a very close eye on them and have a tendency to treat them more reverently than really play with them.

Hi!
Good to see you around again.
Hot wax seems to draw people of all ages towards it to play with.
It's like fire without being burnt by a flame I think is all.

I love fire. Its pretty to watch...amazing how destructive it can be. I like having camp fires in the firepit in my yard...sitting and relaxing by it. I wish i had a fireplace in my house to sit beside.
I dont burn scented candles (i tend to regift those) but i do burn unscented candles when the power is out or I'm feeling like candlelight instead of regular light. I tend to move the candle wax from the candle to a pretty dish...i like to play with hot wax on my fingers.

Growing up I had a fireplace.
As a small child I'd dance in front of it watching my shadow on the wall.
I have bonfires in my firepit out back a lot as well.
I have always been a pyromaniac loving to watch the flames dance.

Hi Grandpa B,
I have tried that when I was younger, I will let it dry in my palm too even if it's very painful at first! LOL!
But, not anymore this time! LOL! I will just light it when I want also to have some scented smell around the house and leave it, no more playing with candles! LOL!

I get my plam either wet or cold with ice etc.
Then pour the wax into it to avoid too much pain.

No I don't play with the hot wax or the candle. After blowing it out that is it, it is out. The candles I normally get are in a jar so it would make it harder to take it out and shave it down some so I just leave them alone. I have heard that wax on the hands are real good for the skin. Maybe I need to start putting hot was on the tops of my hands then peeling it off.

In a jar?
Hard to shave it down?
Well I do it.
After pouring the wax out I use the back edge of a knife.
I slide it around the glass inside and shave off the wax this way as it is still hot. Do this till I get most free making it uniformally shaped.

I had to give up candles
when I got cats.
They're sweet, but kind of
dumb.
And likely to leap at the candles
and knock them over.
Now, I just keep candles for
emergency power outages.

Train the cats is all I can say.
When I had cats they never got near them.
My Buster doesn't go near them either.

I've been known to play around with hot wax as you describe in your post. But I haven't done it in years. Mostly, it's because I use the votive candles. I find there is no waste with them, and all of the scented wax gets used up inside the small holder.
I used to try and cut the edges off of the larger pillar candles as you do, but it never looked nice. The cuts weren't nice and smooth, but rough and edgy. I didn't like that at all.

I use them for my potpourri burners.
But I burn full size candles in the office mostly.
This is where my candle play occurs.
Mine look good as I do it when the candle's
still very warm and the wax is very pliable then.

My dear, I'm a concerned individual and I hope you don't mind. I used to love lighting scented candles at home and hence I studied the art of making candles. Successfully I learned and made a lot of candles that even brought me some income until I've grown tired and decided to rest and make candles only for my own use. However, lately I discovered that not all candles are safe to burn inside our home. The ordinary ones are made of paraffin which is a by-product of the petroleum refinery industry, leftover residue of refined petroleum. Soot given off from burning paraffin candles is the same as burning diesel fuel or fumes from a diesel engine. Soot particles travel deep into the lungs. Breathing soot is so bad to our health and not recommended at all! Tests show that paraffin candles can produce a variety of harmful substances, including benzene & toluene, known carcinogens. Testing done by the Environmental Protection Agency has showed over 20 dangerous compounds in large quantities including acetone, benzene, toluene and lead. The soot from these materials can contain carcinogens, neuro-toxins and reproductive toxins. The American Lung Association says, "Burning paraffin candles can emit small amounts of toxins into the air."
I still do make candles and still burn scented ones but I use the healthy alternatives.... the soy wax and the beeswax. Those are all natural waxes that are sweet smelling. So my unsolicited advice... go and buy those natural based candles if you really enjoy burning candles. Happy burning!

Most candles I but are either beeswax or soy candles for this purpose as well.
But I still burn some regular parrafin ones.
Thanks also for your concern and or warning here as well.

Hahahaha - I had to laugh, GB, because I love fiddling with candle wax too (and I thought I was the only one!) When I was a teenager I used to like putting candles in old chianti bottles, and making them drip down the sides. I'd use different colours to make patterns. I don't do that anymore, but I do love emptying out the hot wax and rolling it up!

Hi grandpa bob! Yes! I love candles too! And I love to play
with the hot wax. I like to mold it into my hands and roll
it around too. It's fun! I pour hot wax into my hand too!
I'm not sure how normal all this is Grandpa Bob, but I'm
sure glad that you do it to! Maybe we can start a hot
candle wax club, what ya think? I love scented candles and
try to have them burning as much as possible. I can't
keep enough of them in the house! I live in an apartment
so I can't do the bonfire thing. It sure would freak out
the neighbors! But, I live down the block from the fire
department and that sure would piss them off!

Yes, I like playing with the wax and have made little wax men out of the old wax or made a big wax ball. I have taken a knive and shaved the wax off the plate that the candle was sitting on. It is fun and I have enjoyed playing with the wax.

Sometimes I wet the palm of my hand with cold water.
Then I pour hot wax into my palm letting it dry.
Peeling it off I love seeing my palm print in the warm wax mold.

I do take out the excess wax so that it will burn better. I do however dip my fingers into the wax and watch it harden then peel off or sometimes i put my finger over the flame and watch it melt off.

I used to play with wax as a child but I rarely burn candles anymore. I don't smoke in my house and can't stand scented anything!
Keeping the child in you alive really brightens up your life. Don't stop!

hi grandpa bob I love scented candles and soft candle light, its
sort of romantic too. course I am a widow but I remember. I didnt know anyone else liked to mess around with the warm melted'wax like that. I get a kick out of it, and then feel sorta silly, as myhusband used to look at me like whoa is she nuts? but he would just laugh at me. maybe its because its hot and we like playing with hot things. lol lol loll.

I do tend to pour the wax off and save it to make another candle. I buy the candle wicks from walmart and i have dozens of candle jars that i just reuse. Sometimes i will mix caryon shavings in the hot wax to give it some bits of color. I will also add oil based scents or sometimes just plain old spices to them.
