Do you play guitar?

My Old Guitar - It's 20 years old by now I suppose. It had been my good companion since school time.

I started to learn this music instruments since the age of 13. But unfortunately, I stopped playing it after I graduated from university. So, all my skills are gone now, and I could only remember some basics. . But, I could still enjoy the fun of playing some simple melody, during my free time alone. So, do you know how to play guitar? Mind to share some experience, tricks or stories? If not, what other instruments that you play? Attached is the photo of my 20 years old guitar

Hmm.. I'm playing guitar for almost 3 years, now. The first 3 months were the hardest. It was like that: I take a guitar, strum it, hear the non-tuned guitar notes and put it back. Really, I had no will to play it.. But then a girlfriend left me and so it began :D I have never had a guitar teacher and all I have learned I learned from the internet. From places like www.ultimate-guitar.com. Now I'm a guitarist and a vocalist of a new indie/punk band. And still learning... If you're willing to play a guitar, don't hesitate. It's never too late ;) P.s. awww, how I wish I could play piano... Probably I need another girlfriend to leave me so I would get some inspiration.. :DD

The starting of everything is not easy. So, once you have familiarized with the guitar for 3 months, you will feel that it's not tough now. I still can recall that, when I was still new to guitar, my fingers became swollen and bruised lightly after playing for the first few months. But the determination to learn it drove me to continue practicing. After sometime, the skin of my fingers had hardened and 'immune' to the guitar strings fractions. And yeah, I finally able to play it well. But now, I haven't played it for so long, and I need to practice is all over again!

Wah, seems like you are ambitious to learn many kinds of musical instruments. I learned the guitar the hard way. There was no short cut for me and what I can only tell, is continuous training that leads to better control of the chords and strings. I am ignorant in playing the piano LoL. But it looks cool to me, for being able to play it. It would be very romantic, to play it for your lover LoL. Drums and singing, are just difficult as piano, to me. Hope I can learn it one day too. Thanks for your interesting response, and have a nice day, chibiXpudding!

Yes, once you get over the pain, you can start enjoying. I still remember, my fingers became swollen and slightly bruised due to the continues friction and pressure on the guitar string. But my determination to learn it kept me going. That's why I said I learned it the hard way. After some time, a thicker layer of skin grow out, and it serves as a protection and I no longer feel the pain LoL.

Yeah, I guess you could say I am (laugh). I wish i would be able to overcome the pain and focus on the actual playing. It really seems to me that the technique isnt as hard as it seems to other people. I think/assume that, once you get over the pain, learning should be step-by-step and it wouldnt take as much time. Is that true? Yeah, it would be so sweet ^///^ to play a beautiful melody for your lover. Good luck~! and Happy Mylotting!

Although I started early, but I do not keep practicing and improving over the years. Otherwise, I would be a great guitarist right now . I think you need to learn to pluck on the string and pressing the chords without looking at the guitar. Because, you need to look at the notes all the time. Once you get used to it, your fingers will press and pluck at the accurate positions. By doing so, you could concentrate on reading the notes and play the song smoothly. Hope this help! Happy playing guitar and happy doing mylot!

Well, playing with a pick has been a trouble to me as well. I have found out that most of the problems arise cause of the pick. Cause you need to know what type of pick you need to use for your guitar. Electric guitar needs medium up to 2mm width of a pick, acoustic guitar, in my opinion, around 1mm, 12-stringed acoustic guitar - as thin as possible, unless you're willing to strum all the time, classic or acoustic nylon guitar - better forget picks and start using fingers :D The other problem is the lack of practise. Keep on practising gammas or variuos scales (even arpeggios will do for the start) at slow tempo, once you suceed to complete one without problems do it again with faster tempo and so on and so on. The best pick technique probably is economy picking, here you can find an example of how to do it http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/guitar_techniques/economy_picking.html

Hi sunilkonda, you shouldn't sell your guitar! Unless you are going to buy a guitar with higher grade, you shouldn't sell it. You can always keep it and bring it along where you go. My guitar had accompanied me for 20 years by now. I brought it to Johore, where I studied in university. I brought it to Penang, where I worked in my first company. I brought it to Oregon State, where I was on company relocation assignment abroad. And now, it's still with me. It won't occupy much space after all. And, it's a very good companion when you are all alone. Hi sandcube, thanks for helping in sharing useful information on guitar learning. You are a genuine guitar enthusiasts, like some of my friends!

Piano looks difficult to me too. But guitar is still manageable for me. That's why I choose to learn it in my teen age. Have you tried harmonica? It's simple and do not need too much skill to play simple song. But of course, if you want to play complicated songs, you need much more practice. I also enjoy hearing people playing instruments. But I also like to listen to music through the music player, with high-end amplifiers and speakers Thanks for your response and happy discussing!

I agree with you diansinta. Piano is a romantic music instruments. It's especially true, when it's played by your loved ones. I think it's not difficult to learn playing it. But the theory scares me. I know some basic through guitar lessons, but it's sufficient for me to play songs with guitar.I don't really need to go deep into these theories.

I agree to what sandcube said. Guitar ROCKS!. Ya, that's why I had always wanted to learn the drum. It really helps us to develop then sense of timing and rhythm, which I am really poor at. The problem is I don't have any friend who own a drum set. There is a set in our company acoustic room, but it's always occupied. Thanks for the sharing again, sandcube, have a nice day!

Yeah, everybody plays guitar nowadays... But I believe, that every guitarist should spend some time playing drums. It helps to develop the inner timing system, so while playing guitar you wouldn't miss the beat. That's what I do on my free time :) And you can learn to play drums on your own anyway. I bet there's at least a hundred videos on www.youtube.com conserning drumming lessons :)

Oh I see. It's all right. For me, I feel lazy sometimes to learn playing the musical instruments. One way of enjoying the music, is to buy a sound system and play the best music that you like most. Then you can enjoy listening to your favourite song in an relax style. I am not good in flute though. I only played it when I was in primary school.

I did that too, back in my days in college. I couldn't agree with you more that, it's such a relaxing pass time, especially when we are alone and feel lonely. It will drive the sadness and loneliness away. I enjoyed singing while strumming. Plucking is not bad too, but I practice strumming more at that time. Thanks for your sharing and have a great day bhushanbodkhe!

I play the guitar, and I think it's one of the most amazing instruments that you can learn how to play. That, and the piano. Because you can play them unaccompanied and they sound amazing. I love singing along with my own guitar playing, and I play the guitar in a band at college which is very fun, as we rehearse for a couple of hours a week :)

Ya, guitar and piano are wonderful music instruments. They could perform magic even if they are played in solo. I think it's because it could produce the melody and its rhythm simultaneously. My friends are practicing in bands in our company's acoustic room on weekly basis. Unfortunately, I couldn't join them due to the clash with their time table. Thanks for your response and have a nice weekend!

I still play the guitar. Even not as good as a rock star but it'll do for me. Playing guitar is the same like riding a bicycle. You'll forget it how but when you get hold of it it'll come by to you slowly. Anyway you still got a 20 year old, that's cool my friend must be valueable to you.lol.

Totally agreed. What a good analogy. I fount it some skills which we haven't practiced for years, we still can pick it up slowly. It's like what you said about riding. Besides, swimming is another one. Even it's been a long time since you last swam, you will just know to float and move around still once you are in the water. Ya, that guitar is my loyal companions for all these years. I play joyful tone with it when I am happy;I also play melancholy melody with it when I mourned over some sad happenings. It's like the best listener, and also the best entertainer. Thanks for your response echosoundz! Have a nice day!

Thanks for your encouragement. In fact I didn't give up playing it. Just that I do not practice it often. Now I just play it when I feel the loneliness. It's still my best companion when I am alone at home. Ya, I am going to try looking for guitar training material online, including youtube. Thanks for your caring response and good suggestion!
