after suffering 2 sleepless nights of pain from toothache, i dragged myself to the dentist. he told me i need to have one filling and one tooth out and gave me antibiotics to take for a week and to make an appointment for a weeks time to go have the tooth out. now the week ends MONDAY!!! I am so scared of going to the dentist, i am scared of the needle, the pain and i worry about him dropping tools and stuff down my throat, and also i worry about being sick over the dentist lol. i have been fine all week but now i only have 2 days to go im so nervous, its making me not sleep well and i have butterflies of nerves in my stomach already. somebody told me to take 2 paracetomol and 2 ibrofen half hour before my appointment to help the pain. is this good advice? also is there any advice you can give me with getting through this, wether it be pain control or anxiety control. the last time i went to the dentist i almost hit him out of my fear of the needle.

Oh no!! dentists aren't fun! I used to be a dental nurse and almost every single patient that comes through the door is terrified of needles and extractions! If the dentist has given you antibiotics and you've been having severe pain then you must have had an infection around that tooth, and if this is the case, the infection eats away at the bone surrounding the tooth and so it makes it a bit looser, and easier to pull out. The dentist would have referred you to an oral surgeon or booked an extra long appointment, and told you, if they thought it was going to be a difficult extraction. The needles are very very fine and sometimes you can't even feel them, but you can ask the dentist, or they may do it anyway, to put some local anaesthetic jelly on there first to make it more comfortable. Dentists can now prescribe mild sedatives for extremely nervous patients - are they aware of how worried you are about it? just be honest i'm sure they'll do everything they can to make things more comfortable for you! dental nurses usually have pretty hardened hands that they'll let you hold for moral support!! hehe xxx

some very good advice thank you, first off when i first went to the dentist he told me that i had a hole right through a tooth and that it was infected to gave me 5 days worth of amoxycillin. then 2 days before i was due back the tooth started hurting again, and it took quite a few injections to numb it, he didnt put no numbing stuff on it and he knew i was scared cus first off i refused to open my mouth lol, and then when i did i got so scared that i jumped up and ran out into the waiting room. took me 20 minutes to finnaly go back in and even then my gums were not completely numb, took ages getting both teeth otu. i been taking ibrofen and paracetomal together every four hrs, still not taking the pain away, i have a constant throbbing, i dont, smoke, have only had one warm drink but i did walk for 30 minutes after leaving the dentist and also did a hour walk today. no other exercise. it was prob a straight foward extraction but cus im so scared i always make a big deal out of it lol. i had 2 wisdom teeth out 2 yrs ago, they were not decayed but kept coming up and down and causing pain, they were a nightmare to get out, a lot of digging, god knows what the tools are called lol, u tell me, and even then i was not having as much pain. after one day i was fine with painkillers. but he did mention it might be painful for 2 to 3 days. another thing i didnt do was rinse with salt water, only started that this morning. i was confused cus he told me not to rinse at all for 24 hours but the leaflet he gave said to rinse lol, so i just listened to the dentist. wat are the symptoms of infection?

wow wHat a long post lol, thank you, yes i agree they could have been more sensitive though. i got a good telling off about brushing my gums, he told me if i didnt brush them better all my teeth would fall out in 10 years wether they are healthy or not cus my gums so bad. so just went out today and bought new toothbruses, toothpaste and listerine lol. by the sounds of it its normal pain im feeling as it generally does go away after taking pain killers then appears 3 to 4 hours later. its really bad first thing as i take tablets before i go to bed and go over the four hours i guess, hope i dont get addicted to painkillers !!!!. so happy to know its not infection. i got to go back for cleaning and a filling in two weeks but i have a problem. another back teeth the one they want to fill, they saying they might not be able to save it, but they will try. only thing is im having real trouble brushing it as its right next to the two teeth i just had removed. the whole area is sore. whats the best thing to do, should i just brush it the little bit i can or just leave til im not sore anymore. in your expereince tell me the best methods of keeping teeth healthy, and if possible how to repair bad gums, thanks for your support x

Sorry hun, i hadn't realised this is an old discussion, thought you were having it out this monday coming! at least you were brave and went to get it over with! It sounds as though there may have still been a bit of infection there when he took the tooth outm this may have been why it took a long time. several injections to go numb, the fluid of the injection can't mix with the infection, it's like oil and water so it's really difficult to get infected teeth numb. Apart from that though, even if a tooth is completely numb you will always be able to feel pressure as it only numbs the nerves that feel pain. It does sound as though they could have been a bit more sensitive about it though! If i were you i'd spread the pain killers out a bit more, so you have paracetamol then 2 hours later ibuprofen then two hours after that paracetamol again, so you are leaving four hours between each dose of each type of medication but you are getting pain killers every two hours. If you are interested the instruments that are long and straight are called either elevators or luxators and are used to loosen the tooth and the ones that actually pull the tooth out are called forceps! I think you did the right thing with the rinsing, it's best not to rinse at all for 24 hours so you don't dislodge that blood clot. The exercise thing is because exercise increases your heart rate and therefore blood flow, so that can also dislodge the clot. The signs of infection are severe pain that doesn't respond to pain killers, it often gets worse when you lie down or try to go to sleep because when you are led down the blood flow to your head (and obviously mouth and teeth) is increased, other signs are swelling and bleeding from the extraction site. It does obvioulsy take some time for the pain to go away after having a tooth out, but it should be helped with pain killers and be starting to get better after a couple of days, if it's not you should go back, you may need more antibiotics, or if you have a dry socket (where the blood clot hass not been formed or has been lost) they will put something in to help it heal - it tastes foul but it works!!! Hope that helps and that you are feeling better soon my lovely, i really feel for you toothache is awful, but you were really brave to go along and have the extraction done! xxx

take the meds they advise, they do this all the time, they are trying to help you control the pain. Remember how bad it hurt before you went to the dentist, if you don't get this done, it will go back to hurting like that again. I go to the dentist twice a year, I've had 3 root canals. I have never had a problem with the professional people dropping anything, especially not down my throat - so don't worry about that. I get a grip on the arms of the chair, then I resolve to not let go until they are done, this works well with preventing any flailing around. Remember, these people go to school for YEARS to become the professionals they are. Your fears are all unfounded, but you are the only one who can over come your fears. Good luck over coming these fears!

they took all 4 wisdom teeth out at the same time in my case, and they were all reasonably healthy and still under the gums. now, the guy who did my root canals said that he had to knock out some of his clients - of course that costs more, he also said I was a pretty good patient - of course, 2 of the 3 root canals have been since I retired so I didn't have big deals to do and was missing work.

thank you both your comments and classykat i will take ur advice and try to be brave. my kids are fine going to the dentist, they love it actually and see it as an adventure. i use my own set of teeth to show them an example of what happens if they dont brush theirs properly lol. and i know i should go regularly and then i wont have the pain so bad but when im not in the pain its so easy to just put it off and off and off until i forget lol.

You will be just fine, I had two pulled at one time back in July, don't worry about the needle, just don't look at the instruments. Before the dentist use the needle he will put something on your gum that will deaden it so that the needle will not hurt. I would not advise you take over the counter medication before going to the dentist, it might interfere with the medication that is used for deaden you gum. The pain medication the dentist gave me after the extraction made me feel worse than than pulling the teeth.
