Have you ever refused to pay for your meal when eating out?

Because the food or the service was so bad, or something similar? There have been times that I have ordered and eaten a meal that was really terrible and although I have reluctantly forked over the cash for the bill when I leave, I sometimes wish I had more nerve to fight for the right to NOT have to pay at all. Do you think we as consumers have the right to not have to pay if the meal was below our expectations? Have you NOT paid before? Or are you like me by paying the bill and just never returning to that restaurant again?

I don't recall not ever paying for a meal when dining outside. I'm more likely to be that diner who withholds tips or leaves a very small tip if I got really bad food or very bad service. I've never thought about not paying especially if a high-end restaurant gave us a low-grade meal but that hasn't stopped me from complaining and vowing to never, ever go back there. I'm also one to tell people about my experiences at restaurants so I would gladly steer my audience away from that place. I'm also that type who risks having "spit on her food" by telling the server if there is something wrong with my food and then they take it back to the kitchen. I have once gotten barely-cooked pasta at Cheesecake Factory and I told them that and they were very apologetic and made me another one and I got my Pasta da Vinci for free. I still love going to this place.
Before finding your post, I was reading reviews about local restaurants. I love reading and watching restaurant reviews.

I am definitely someone who will complain but I have never refused to pay either. I don't even want to think about someone spitting in or messing with my food! I have seen this in movies and TV shows before and the thought is disgusting. It was good of Cheescake Factory to do what they did though and it's moves like this that make happy customers that tell others positive things even though the situation was less than satisfactory at first. I am not surprised at all then that you keep going back! Thanks for responding SaintAnne and if one of those reviews you read are for a restaurant in Cairo, then don't forget to tell me!

Can I post links here to a site with these reviews? Because I used to think links are recommended just as long as they're not referrals but I am confused now. I don't want your discussion deleted.

I have worked in too many restaurants to ever eat at them. I know what goes on behind the scenes. I worked very briefly at a restaurant that was a VERY popular place. The chef would make up pizza crusts and place them in a rack at night before he went home. In the morning he would have to patch up the edges that the rats had nibbled on. I have seen cockroaches running across food sitting in the kitchen and I've seen cooks drop stuff and pick it up off the floor and put it back in the pan. Just to be on the safe side you should be demanding your money back for every meal eaten out!
High-end restaurants are usually more conscientious about everything that goes into the meal though, so I would feel 'safer' in them.
My kids and I went to a pizza place one night. It was pretty late and we were the only patrons in the place. Our server was excellent, we never had to wait long for anything. We left her a huge tip and my kids went on out to the car. I stood at the cashier's counter for ages and nobody came. I stood there for a few more ages before I finally just walked out myself. And that's what I would do if the food was bad. I would just walk out. I wouldn't eat the food either.

Oh that's just disgusting zigzagbuddha! I have worked in a number of restaurants too but I never witnessed anything like this! You may have just single handedly ensured that no mylot member will EVER eat at a restaurant again! lol. I think we have every right to walk out if the food is bad, but if we have eaten it all then we should pay for it.

That's ok, Mr. Barbed Wire, no one is closer to my butt than you are, and you are still the King of the Barbs in my book!
Yes James, I know how much pride you take in being a fair-minded, obedient, and upstanding citizen... I myself am an old pirate, so you won't win my respect in that regard. But I am pretty sure winning my respect is not at the top of your 'to-do' list.

GOSH! That is sickening! I like to go to these fast pizza places where I can sit, watch them take the dough out of the refrigerator and make the pizza right there! These have to spread out the dough. It's not made before hand. There are two where we can watch every move they make and I like it that way. You don't have to worry if it's nasty or dropped or eaten before hand. UGH! That makes me sick to think about it!

Lol, we had part of our meal comped once because the appetizer was bad (I mean really bad the manager was angry at the cook, lol) and we didn't want another one. Usually, if my husband (who is picky) doesn't like it, I'll still eat it and we take it home when we can.
I would try and fight it if it is bad. Not all restaurants will probably comply as sometimes the dish is just the way it's supposed to be but it's not necessarily your taste.
I don't think you have the right not to pay if you still ate the meal, but if you can't stomach it and it is truly bad you shouldn't have to pay for it. However, most people just don't want to argue and simply never go back.

I agree with your statements about non-payment only if the meal was not eaten. It would be pretty unfair to finish the entire meal and then expect not to pay for it! I am one of those people that will complain there and then and just never go back again if they don't rectify things well enough. Sometimes it's easier to do things this way rather than make a scene! Thanks for the response jonesy.

I have never (yet) refused to pay for my meal, But I have gave the waitress a bad tip, if we got very bad service and the restaurant was not very busy. And the waitress never explained to us what was going on and why we were not getting good service!
I have waitresed before so I know how the customers are supposed to be treated!

I definitely adjust my tip amount too when it comes to a bad meal or service Louise. Funnily enough I too have been a waiter before and there is no question it can be a stressful job; but even when things get hectic you can still keep your customers informed and happy. Some people are just not cut out to be dealing with other people it seems! Thanks for responding.

At least Pizza Hut made amends to ensure you would come back again Barb. It is really frustrating when restaurants don't go to any trouble at all to make their customers feel better like this. It must have been tough for your daughter too having the smell of all that pizza wafting around and not being able to have any!

I once met my daughter for lunch when she was working in school. I took her out to Pizza Hut and we ordered the single pizza each, bread sticks and coke. She had an hour and we sat there 45 mins and no pizza! We had the breadsticks and coke. Finally, I asked the girl what was going on and she said, 'oh, I forgot to turn in the order'. Well, it only took 5 minutes and she finally brought them to our table - got right in front of us and dropped them in the floor!! It made me SO mad. There my daughter had wasted her entire lunch hour and had nothing to eat. The manager said we'll give you a free pass for pizzas another day and you can have your breadsticks and coke free. And, we took it!! But that still didn't keep my daughter from being hungry the rest of the afternoon.

As a consumer, I think wehave the right to express our views and fight for the getting something which we feel is below standards. Whether we get it or not after that is another matter.
I have come close to this knid of a situation James, wherein I was totally digusted with the service and the quality of the food. The starters were horrible ,the service pathetic and I decided not to order the main course and walk out.
Just then one of the people from the management walked up and profusely apologised and insisted that everything would be on the house. The rest of the evening and meal were prettygood actually.
It's another thing that the restaurant closed down after 2 months.

Bandit ! Food terrorist if one can call it that. The hungry man's frustration, anger especially if you are paying for it, made to wait, get stuuf that is cold and tasteless, with some ingredients missing. So irritated i was James that given a chance i would have closed it down that very day. To add to the frustration was the embarassment, as i had some guests with me and it was my suggestion.

I agree alok. And some of us have far more mettle than others too when it comes to getting our way! It sounds like you made out like a bandit at that restauant you described! But it's also not surprising that they closed down soon after because if this happened to you then you were surely one of many and word travels fast when things like this happen. Thanks for the response.

I've never refused to pay for a meal. But if it wasn't upto my expectations, I usually tell them so before I leave. Most of the times, if there's been a mistake or I have found something in my food (that wasn't supposed to be there), the restaurant has never charged me for it.
If the service is bad....I do not pay a tip...but I usually make sure that they know I wasn't happy.

I will tell them immediately upon receiving the meal or after the first few bites if there is an issue with the food itself. I have had many a restaurant replace my food but never had one offer to remove any charges. I think it's important for us to be outspoken when things aren't adequate otherwise they can't ever improve things. But aside from the smaller tips and management complaints etc, the best way for us to get our revenge is to just not eat there anymore if they don't step up and satisfy our concerns. Thanks for the response.

I've seen people at restaurants say the food was terrible and they refunded them. If their a good business they should refund you if their service was that bad for you. If its that terrible they probably won't refund the meal if you eat the whole thing.

We have complained a few times. Two different times, we have been out with our friends in this one particular restaurant (it is no longer there) and got terrible service. Once, we complained and the other man with us didn't want to complain, but another couple standing outside the inside door heard it and came in and said the same thing had happened to him and his wife. The manager wasn't going to charge us but my husband said, 'no, we want to pay because whether we pay or not, we won't be back'.
I think, if you never complain, the managers never know what is going on. Sometimes it is the waiter/waitress, but sometimes it's the cooks mistakes. The first time we complained in that restaurant, they never brought out 3 orders of onion rings, and said they didn't have anymore, although THEY make their own! We think the cooks were lax that night. And also, I had ordered apple pie with ice cream, and they bought we a wedge that wasn't even the width of two of my fingers. We did refuse to pay for that! It was ridiculous! It was as though they has split a piece of pie in half!

It's not surprising that the restaurant you mention is not there anymore then Barb! I agree that it is important that we say something rather than nothing at all. They can't ever improve on things if they don't get both the good AND bad feedback. I would have sent back the pie you ordered too. It's funny how small the servings can be at some of the high-end restaurants these days too. You pay a small fortune for something that resembles the size of a postage stamp! Thanks for responding.

If this was a particular branch of a successful chain then for sure it was bad management. It's a pretty sad state of affairs to have so many people at one time feeling cheated like this. You would think that there would be set standards for all chain restaurants? I haven't actually heard of this chain before.

I complained when the waitress came out with it! I knew it wasn't the size they served. It wasn't only us having the problems - it was everybody. The next time we went, we noticed that none of the usual waitresses were there. They were trying to help their business, but it didn't work too long! It is a chain here (Shoney's), but that one is no longer in business. We think that it was the fault of the manager.

erm it depends i can't think of doing it i on the odd occasion i have experienced it have complained afterwards (worked as a waitress so never send it back urgh *shudders*) and suggested that they sort it out and never gone back. If it was horrendus i would expect money knocked off my bill i don't think i would ever expect it free but i would want some for of compenbsation if the experience was that bad. I'm very how shall i say vocal with my face rather than my mouth i pull face and twitch and you can really tell what i'm thinking without me having to say so i think often the waiter/ess notices before it gets to the not paying stage lol

I think we are well within our rights to ask for a replacement meal if the one we are given is not up to par. But we should definitely make our requests and complaints during or before the meal is eaten rather than once we are done! I have seen people do this before and it makes no sense?? If it was THAT bad then why did they eat the whole thing?? lol. Thanks for the response mands.

no i don't actually eat it i won't send it back either I don't want spit and god knows what on my next choice and can't say it's a myth cos i've seen it done. I will just complain maybe move onto a different course (ie sweet choosing something spitm snot or bogeys are easily recognisable or have a tea while i wait for my partner/friends to finish). If possible i would just choose to get up and complain (away from the other people though i'm not a stomper) but i usually eat with friends so just because my meal is crap doesn't necessarily mean theirs will be. I agree with you on the eat it thing if you can manage to eat it it wasn't really that bad in the first place then now was it. I have on more than one occasion sat there while friends finished their meal with a full plate in front of me. Most of the time i just assume it's the one meal and move onto the next course. i've not had that much bad luck and i usually have a starter so if there had been an issue they have just knocked the crap meal off the price of the full bill. I just don't go there again to much choice and decent places to settle for bad food.

I think many of us have asked for replacement meals rkrish but you seem to be one of only a few people so far that has not paid! I think that many of us find it less confrontational to just never return rather than make a scene out of it but there have definitely been times I wish I could do the same and not pay myself! I believe that we have refused to pay a portion of our bill if it was totally messed up. I would however, do this only when my husband is with me. I am not much for causing a scene. A few times we have complained about something with our food or service and the management has OFFERED to pay all or part of our bill.
It helps that my husband is 6'8" tall and looks like a linebacker

i have never refused to pay for a meal at a resturent, but i have also been very disappointed about a meal and then just paid. I don't really know if you have the right not to pay, cause mabye the expectations were just too high. It depends of what the problem with the meal is. I have complained about a steak, cause it was very bad, and i got a new one.

No, I have never done this, but my husband and I saw a woman do this many years ago. We had gone out to eat at Lyon's and overheard that she refused to pay for food that was lousy, though she had eaten her entire meal. It must not have been so awful if she was able to do that! My husband and I knew she was just trying to get a free meal. Did she get away with it? Yes. But the employees there got this woman's information in case she ever tried to pull anything like that again. I think they even took her picture.
I can understand about refusing to pay if the food is lousy, but be sure to do so after a few bites, not after licking the plate clean! If customers are willing to eat all their food then they should pay up regardless of how it tasted.

Now this I don't agree with. If this woman had an issue with the meal and it was SO bad then why did she eat the whole thing?? I agree with your own mindset totally! For sure she has done this before and is just looking for freebies. I have asked for meal replacements but never AFTER I have finished! lol. It's funny that they took her picture though. The other day we went to my hubbys favorite restaurant. We usually do not have a problem. But there are always exceptions I guess. Our waitress washorrible!! And it wasn't because the place was busy. Some of didn't get drink refills, She took one order then brought it to the table. Others didn't get to oder before she walked off again. To say it was frustrating would be an understatement! We paid the bill. And left a tip. My hubby tends to be generous with tips. This time he wasn't. I don't think I would have left one.

There is nothing worse than being at a restaurant we know and love and then having it ruined by bad service. It does sound like your hubby is generous indeed because I certainly would have been reluctant to leave a tip also in a situation like this! Thanks for the response ersmommy.

We have never flat out refused however, there have been times when we have asked for the manager and told him the problem. For the most part, they would either take some of the meal off of the ticket, if it was the food that was wrong, or they would comp the entire meal. We left it up to them on how to solve it. I mean the food or service had to be completely horrific for us to do something like that.

I have done this also stryker. A quiet word with the Manager usually brings about a positive outcome! It is just frustrating though when you occasionally get a Manager that has little or no customer skills and doesn;t seem to care at all about making things right. I have never refused to pay either but I have certainly wanted to do just that before! Thanks for responding and welcome to mylot too.

I wouldnt say i have ever refused to pay for a meal...but I will voice my feelings or thoughts to the manager in hopes they will take the meal off the bill...in most cases that is what happens. If they dotn offer to take the item off the bill, then yes i just wont return. My hubbys best friend is notorious though for making the biggest scene in places to get a meal for free if hes unhappy, and then stupid enough to go back...if i have to act like a horses behind to get the item free, then i wont go back, but if the manager cares about his customers and does it willingly, then i will return and give them another chance.

I think it can also depend on where we are eating too faln_angel. We are more likely to get discounts, replacements or freebies at a major restaurant chain than we would at a local cafe or something you would think! Your hubby's friend sounds liek a bit of a ball breaker! It's interesting that he keeps going back though. I will always appreciate a Manager that does everything they can to make things right also. It's just that not all Managers seem to be competent in this area unfortunately so in this case there is NO chance of me ever returning. Thanks for the response.
