Social Security checks are to go up 5.8 percent in 2009. This is supposed to be a cost of living raise, granted it is a increase as to what we recieved in 2008, but I would like to know how the government figures out what the cost of living is, because there is no way that 5.8 percent will in anyway help with the high gas, food and entergy prices that we are seeing today.

I think it's CPI based and an average of the price increase across certain basic needs goods. It's based on a past year average. Be happy it goes up that much. My husband in the past few years only has gotten somewhere around a 1% to 1.5% pay increase. It's insane. And yes, he is looking for another job, but of course it's difficult right now anyway.
