I simply try to reassure myself. I tell myself that it was just a dream, and therefore, cannot hurt me. I take deep breaths and try to go asleep. Although I must admit that this tactic does not always work. If it doesn't, I read a book, or watch a movie for a few minutes, in order to clear my head a bit. Then I retry to go back to sleep.

I just realize to myself that it is a dream and it has a meaning that is only meant for me to understand. There are different kinds of dreams of course, but I believe there is some kind of meaning to all of our dreams. You can try to analyze your dreams by writing them down and knowing that your subconscious really has a way of finishing off what happens to us in our life while we are awake to relieve our stress. If you write them down, even the scary ones, it doesn't seem that frightening and you can tell that there is a pattern. Our inner mind has a way of acting out in dreams that are interpreted through to us metaphorically such as symbols. I believe books on dreams are wrong because all symbols from our dreams mean different things to different people. For example, snakes are scary to some people but others love snakes so dreams of snakes would be very different to whoever loves or has a fear of snakes. You know what I'm saying. So, that would be what you could do because only you can understand what your dreams mean to you. Good luck.
