You Want How Much?

Every year I attend the Orvis (UK) sale held in the town hall of a nearby town. I love their menswear but it is quite expensive and so I tend to shop at their outlet store or in the sales. For several years I have coveted a slip on leather trimmed fleece vest in their catalogue. However at $178 (in American money) I found it pretty pricey and saved my pennies. Imagine my excitement to day when I saw that they had some in the sale in my size (Bell tent. Boy Scouts for the use of!) Imagine my horror when I discovered that the vest is made from polyester! YUK. It was reduced to $98 but I was not prepared to pay that for something made from man made fibre. The rest of the sale was equally poor this year. Never mind. There's always next year to look forward to. Have you ever wanted something badly only to discover that it was not what you thought that it was?

The only thing that I always wanted was kids and they certainly didn't turn out to be anything like what I expected. They also went and grew up and that wasn't in the plan.

They're not but I've decided I'll have to keep them and see if I can recoup some of the money they cost.

I think that there's a free listing day on E Bay coming up. That'll save you a couple of bob putting them up for sale. I'll be with you about 8.30ish.

You can't have everything in life Nanna. Anyway, I though that they weren't yours? LOL.

There was a beautiful dress I wanted. It was $240 dollars. It looked great on me. I was under the impression that it was cotton, only to find that it was polyester as well. Polyester bugs me. It's itchy and weird. I was kind of releived though as I really didn't have that type of money to spend on it

That's it exactly Dizz. It's so disappointing. A couple of years ago I took my daughter to London to find a prom dress - we went to Harrods and saw something in red by someone whose name I have forgotten, but I do remember the price: £3000 ($6000)! The dress was an exquisite design but was all synthetic material. Now who in their right mind would pay that money in the first place and in a synthetic material to boot!! We eventually found her one for £35 in a sale made from silk and cotton!

Sorry to hear that. I have had that happen to me a few times when ordering out of a catalog. I guess it was marked down because it was made of polyester.

It was a rip off. I was so disappointed. But at least I didn't actually buy the thing.

Yes! I need a sweater and saw one the other day was was warm, attractive and just perfect, and cheap! However, I saw that all the sweaters of that type had just slits for buttonholes, no finishing at all, like someone just cut them wish scissors. They would ravel and rip very quickly. I was disappointed not to buy the sweater but I refuse to buy something that would be ruined very soon.

It's probably some new fashion craze, America has these things at least twice a year and usually about 60% of the people jump onboard. It's great for the companies and wastes peoples' money that they would've spent on something else equally as stupid.

It's disappointing when you see that. Unless you are able to finish the sweater yourself. But then shouldn't the manufacturer have dome that?

That's crazy. So, was it the same vest shown in the catalog? I don't think I would pay that much for anything polyester. As for wanting something badly then finding out it wasn't what I thought it was, I haven't had that experience, really. I look through catalogs, but if I think I might want to buy it, I want to go to the store where it is sold and look at it, touch it, pick it up and inspect it before I actually fork out the cash for it.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Exactly the same. In the catalogue it looked very smart. I am quite disappointed but there's no way that I'm going to pay that kind of money for something in polyester! I agree with you. There's a lot to be said for feeling the goods!

Hi ya p1kef1sh Oh yeah I sure have. I was looking at something on the internet for my sister-in-law as she is due to have her baby in a few weeks time and I wanted to get some creams specifically for her and not the baby (he will have his share of stuff don't worry). I decided to go to the shop in question to buy it as it was going cost me a fiver for delivery and it was only £11. I got to the shop and saw the item! The tubes of cream were like sample sizes and tiny. I have now decided to buy the shops own brand and make a bag up myself costing the same price but larger tubs! I was very disappointed!

I can imagine how disappointing that must have been Humbug. I think that you will end up with an even better present by making up your own bag. Actually one of the things that I recall from The Boss's pregnancy was the attention that she got which evaporated once our daughter was born. The poor mother needs little gifts from time to time I think. It's easy for them to become sort of "forgotten".

i love my sales p1ke.but i certainly would not have paid that much for a vest made out of polyester.i really have never wanted something that badly,maybe a good leather handbags,and i will only buy them on special and only if i know for sure i am getting a good deal.the sale i love the most is the scholastic book sale,the factory is near my place .every year we can fill up a box of books and videos for $40.00 dollars,so if you know how to pack a box up really well,you can cram a lot of stuff into a box.cheers sue

My dad used to go the book sales that worked like that too Sue. He brought home so many books that my Mum became quite distracted by the fact that the house was starting to look more like a bookshop. As he keeps reminding me "one day you'll have to sort them all out"!

Doesn't that happen to everyone? We buy something with great expectations, and then the novelty of it wears off faster than we thought it would. On the other hand, getting more first hand information and knowledge on the item/product is a GOOD thing, if you discover it's not "all that" BEFORE you shell out the cash for it. So your experience with the vest turned out to be a great thing. I bought a digital camera almost 2 years ago because it was on sale and I was aching to have a digital camera (mostly to post updated pics of myself on dating sites and msn lol). I brought it home, figured out how to use it, and discovered that it also had a video feature. COOL! Now I could take digital video from my camera! It wasn't long before I discovered that most digital cameras come with that feature, but MY camera was special. It has video, but no sound with the video. What's the point of THAT??? Buyers remorse? Not really. I didn't know it had that feature when I bought it. But what I have learned from the situation is that my next camera is going to have video with SOUND.

I used to have a digital camera like that. My MIL left it on a bus!! Grrrr. But it's so frustrating when these things happen. Very disappointing.

Hi P1kef1sh, How disappointing for you, I can't stand polyester myself so agree it would not have been worth paying 50 quid for at all. I don't think I have ever been disappointed really, I am not a shopper at all really and will just purchased as and when I need to replace a worn out item or if buying for a special occasion, so no expectations therefore no disappontment I guess. Huggles. Ellie :D

It really wasn't worth the money and I couldn't help but woender how much the person that made it was paid. I bet nothing like £49 or £89 which was the full price!

Hi Pike-Guess over the years I have seen things that would be great to buy and have probably done so at the spur of the moment, but now I try to save my pennys when it comes to that, even on clothes, charity shops sell really good smart clothing and tend to go there a lot...littleowl

I have looked occasionally but never bought any clothes at a charity shop. Mens clothes tend to be all grandad suits etc. I have a few of those of my own! Women are always telling me what great bargains you can get there. I buy books there all the time though. I tend to buy what i want when I want it, however I draw the line at £49 for a polyester vest!

Afraid not Pike,I am no clothes horse,I am at my happiest when I am plodding around in my old scruffs.But I do know what you mean,you psyche yourself up to the garment,you are almost salivating at the very thought of it,and then all of your dreams are dashed.So how come the leather trimmed fleece suddenly became a polyester trimmed fleece?was it because it was a sale item,often sale items are imported especially for that sale.At the lower price it should be of reasonable quality though.But if you wanted leather then leather you must have ,have you thought of going to the shopping outlet at Street?we have been there a few times,for hubby's shoes.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
19 Oct 08
It was still leather trimmed. But the fleet was polyester. All the clothes come in from the US as it's a US company and this vest has been in the catalogue for a couple of years. They have an outlet store at Street. Up beside Past Times next time that your there you might have a look. I go to Street quite often for clothes. It's about an hour's drive from here. I usually struggle with Clark's though. They never seem to have my size shoes in stock. That said I have some fantastic Draper's slippers from there. I just replace the woolly insoles from time to time.

Well this doesn't happen to me a lot. I look at clothes when they're at the right price already. I don't always eye something and wait for it to go on sale. SOmetimes I get disappointed when the item I want doesn't come in my size anymore. Or if the last thing on the shelf but there's a hole or tear or just doesn't fit well...

Yes, i have and it is really so disappointing. I mean you have waited and maybe have been saving for it and when finally you have the chance to buy it or get it, only to find out that it was not exactly what you have been wishing for. Once i have had this experience with a blouse that i have been always looking at a department store display window. Then, finally when i have the money to purchase it, i found out that it's fabric is not what i thought it is made of.So, i ended up buying a new pair of shoes instead.

Hi pikey, Sorry about the vest. I know how disappointed you must have been. Yes, this has happened to me too. I've wanted something and waited for so long only to find out that it wasn't what I thought it was and ended up like you disappointed and not getting it after all. I hate when that happens! But, you shall find another vest that is even better and maybe even at a better price! Just keep looking! That's what I do when I really want something badly. And sooner or later I know that I will find it somewhere and it will be better!

I shall have to see what else is out there Opal. I was quite frustrated though. Onwards and upwards!
