What do you put in your grits?

Are grits just a Southern dish? We have them all the time in our house. I like to put egg yolks in the grits after they cook and then cook them a bit longer. Tastes buttery! Plus, I like to use black pepper and chipped up bacon on my grits when they're done. Do you eat grits? What do you put on your grits?

grits are made from white corn with the hull removed. They are then ground into as meal that is cooked in water or milk into a pudding like dish.

I like my grits with butter, salt, and pepper. Sometimes I put cheese and bacon in them too. Scrambled eggs on the side are good.

After I responded to this discussion I had to go make some grits. I used butter, cheese, and peppered bacon crumbled up. Since I used the peppered bacon I left out the pepper and salt I normally add. It was great. Even the baby ate some.

I like to slow cook them on the stove and put a ton of butter in them and just as they finish add salt. And when I put them in the bowls I add kraft sliced cheese. Sooo delicious. Both my sons just love it.

Oh no, not grits I hate grits. As a child my mother used to make us eat them, I know now that that was the best she could do at the time, but oh how I hated them. For some reason, I can not get them down, they make me gag. My husband on the other hand loves grits, I do not make them often for him, but every time we go out for breakfast he wants to go someplace where they serve grits. He basically eats his with butter, salt and pepper. He will have sausage and eggs with them, but not mixed in with them.

Sausage and eggs are a good side combo for grits. I like mine with toast and jam, too.

In the south we call them grits, but while living in Colorado, my friend called them Cream of Wheat. To me, Cream of Wheat is not grits. I love to add shrimp to my grits. Eating grits is also great at dinnertime or for a brunch and you can put it in elegant shrimp cocktail glasses. I saw it Paula Deen do this once on her show.

That's a really cool idea. Just today I was wondering if it were possible to add any kind of meats to grits. I guess so! Thanks for the great suggestion!

I like grits with ham and ham gravy over them, as well as with butter and salt and with cheese... or however else they're fixed!

grits - Grits are made from white hominy and coarsely ground.
Hominy is made from corn with the hulls removed
on their own grits are bland and rather tasteless. I like mine with a light sprinkling of sugar with butter or with cheddar cheese and salt and pepper. I never thought about putting any thing else with them. But now I'm going to experiment with some of the suggestions I have read here.

I don't know if they just southern or not, I'm up north and they have them in the grocery stores up here. They must sell them, I think that most of the northern people don't know exacually wht to do with them. First time I seen them I put milk on them cause I thought they was like oatmeal. But spending 17 years in the south, I have learned to doctor them up quite a bit, I like cheese in mine. Like they serve them at the Waffle House, cheese grits. I put butter and sometimes bacon in them. But mostly I just put in cheese. I eat them sometimes just alone. If people would try them they might like them, Nice and hot and good to warm you up in the winter time.

I tried grits a few times, and I think that I needed to do more to flavor them. I'll have to give them another try, since that was years ago, and my culinary skills weren't as refined then as they are now.

Grits are my favorite breakfast dish. I put butter, salt and pepper in my grits, I eat them every morning, sometime when I am in the mood I will scramble an egg and add it.

I have never had grits before. As a matter of fact, i don't even really know what they are. I will try everything once, however, so I would like to try them some day. A very interesting question, and it will be very interesting to read other's responses.

My mother grew up on grits, but her great grandmother came from the South, so I figure that's where it came from. You don't generally find them in South Jersey, regardless of the proximity of the Mason Dixon line. But, I've found that I like them, even though I generally don't like anything made with corn meal. I eat them the same way I eat my cream of wheat (which they remind me of) - with butter and sugar (although now, I use artificial sweetener). When they're made right, they're so nice and creamy. I do like them. I'm not sure about having them as a savory side, though. I'd have to try some before committing to making or ordering them.
