Hey everyone. I usually shut my computer off after I'm done using it for the day because there was this one time a few months ago were I decided to leave it on all day and later that same day, I came back to my computer screen and happened to see a strange message over my computers wall paper that said (many people are using this computer) it looked like someone was trying to hack in to my computer so I immediately shut it off so after that I always shut my computer off when I'm done for the day just to be safe, and I haven't gotten any more strange message's like that since then, so do you shut your computer off after your done or do you leave it on all night?

Where I worked as a software support tech we always recommended people shut down their computers at the end of the day. Leaving them on is just asking for trouble. If you are not there to stop things from going wrong because of viruses or hackers you could lose everything on your computer when you have to reformat.
So better safe than sorry I say. Shut down and save electricity too.

Good it is much better for your computer because that way it can shut down each programme correctly.

i do shut my computer after i am done using it.
first it's nice wise to leave it on, when you have no intention of using it.it's a waste of electricity not unless if you have a lot of resources to spare.
second, like what you said, other people are trying to take over all your information inside your computer.
and third, treat your computer like a human, it needs some rest too, or it might cause operation problems from using it for a long time.

I love my computer very much. Because I love it so much I always make sure that it is not overheated. Every time after I am finished doing anything on the computer, I will shut down the computer and shut off the plug too. This can save me a lot on electricity bills, isn't it? Furthermore mine is a laptop and it is very sensitive to heat. The salesperson who sold me the laptop told me to put a fan underneath the laptop so that it would be cool all the time. If not, I have to sit in an air-conditioned room so that no damage would happen when it is overheated.
I've heard about the thing you told too. I have a friend who work in an office and she told me the same thing. She said she went out for lunch but she didn't shut down her computer. Later when she came back from lunch she saw something funny on the monitor screen. The words displayed on the monitor screen sounded something like it had been hacked too. So I guess it is important that we never leave our computer unattended. If we want to go out somewhere, always make sure that we shut down the computer so that we do not leave it idle more than it is supposed to be.

I turn it off after I finish. The cool thing about my computer though, is that if it's about to get hacked into, it restarts itself so they don't have access to it. Plus, I have a pretty strong firewall, which only allows what I want on it. Also, I turn it off at night because if I don't, then the computer might overheat and then i'd have a huge problem on my hands the next time I tried to use it. When you're using a computer from 2004, you can get a lot of problems from it.

I don't and will never use the default firewall that comes with any Windows program. They are not up to today's standards. Any computer genius can get around it easily- and not have much problems.
I use Zone Alarm as my firewall (and it is a free download) and I have never had any trouble with it.

No, I actullay put my computer on stand by. When you have to cut your computer on and of all the time it uses up alot of electricity current. So putting it on stand by do not use up alot of electicity current.

yeah we have a strong firewall too so I dont worry about it, but I found out my friend was shutting her computer off "the hard way" I was instructed that shutting your computer off by the button in front is harder on computer than simply turning it off with the start computer shut down option, likely because with the start computer shut down option the software shuts itself off wherareas if you turn it off at the front of the computer it is a power cut off option thus would likely be harder on things inside.... at least thats my guess

You are correct.
You should only use the hard switch to shut down your computer when it is frozen and you can not get to the start button to shut the power off from there.

Since I got a new desktop PC for the living room (actually my mom did), I decided to give it some pre-shutdown cleaning.
So before I even shut the PC down, I always go to two freeware programs for cleaning it.
First, I go to Disk Cleaner, wait until it loads up, and then press the "Clean" button letting it do it's work in deleting the files from the Temporary Internet Files, the Recycle Bin, etc.
Then I go to Auslogics Disk Defrag, choose the hard drives I want to defrag, and then press "Next" to let it defrag the selected drive. When it's finished, I select another drive and repeat the same steps.
When all cleaning is done, THEN I shutdown the computer, shutdown the hard drives and leave the room. It's actually multiple steps that I have to do in order to keep the PC in top working condition.

yes i always turned my computer off when im done using it. for those who keep it open, be sure to put a password on it so that no one can harm your data. and time after time , update your anti-virus and scan your computer.

I have never left it on over night unless I am downloading something. I, also, don't leave it on as much as I used to when I am away doing other things for an hour or so because I picked a very bad infection that way even though the browser wasn't on and I was just connected to the Internet as I always am since I have cable. If it looks like something is being downloaded to your computer even though your virus protection says it has blocked it, you should close your browser if you can which is not always possibe in which case turn the power off. Then wait a couple of minutes, turn it on and do a system restore to a day or two before. Lots of times this will prevent problems from whatever was trying to infect your computer.

Sounds like you left your computer connected to the internet. But i normally shut it down when i'm sleeping at night or going out because you don't know what might happen when you are away, what if a fan suddenly stop working and it gives a massage that your fan has stop working and you need to take action about it,where will you be?
My suggestion is to shut down your computer when you are not working on it, you are even sving on the electricity bill too

I always rurn off my computer as it is a waste of energy leaving it on overnight. I guess it is far safer too, though I had never thought about that till reading your discussion!

Yes, I shut mine off before I go to bed at night and turn the power plug off. I do it partly because it saves some energy, but I've found if I don't turn it off the files get all messed up and programs freeze up when I try to use them. If I turn it off once a day and let it "put all the files away" I don't have that problem.

Of course I turn it off when it is not in use. The cost of electricity is high and of course we need to save up. Leaving it open the whole day wastes a lot of electricity. Also I really don't worry about turning it off because I could still receive e-mails and stuff even after I have turned off the computer.

Always turn my computer off once i've finished with it as I always worry about it overheating. Have never heard of a circumstance like the one you've experienced. That sounds really worrying would have made me very paranoid to have spotted that on my screen.
