What's the deal with this thing called "spellpower" ?

Ok, I really don't see the benefits of changing the damage/healing stat to spellpower. Lots of gears now have the same stats only with different names. Also, it's hard to determine if a certain gear is for a caster dps or a healer. What are your thoughts on this?

with the increase of spell power the damage from ability that needs mana increase too.
