Colin Powell Endorses Obama

United States

Colin Powell just declared on Meet the Press that he will be voting for Barack Obama. His statement about his reasons for coming to that decision literally moved me to tears. His statement was quite clear - he believes that both men will be good presidents, but he believes that Barack Obama is the right president for the challenges that we face today. Do you think that Colin Powell's endorsement will make much if any difference to voters in general? Do you think it will change anyone's mind?

You beat me to it... I thought I would be the first one to start this discussion. :-) Yes I was very excited to hear this news. I have always had a great deal of respect for Powell. It won't change the minds of the far right but I don't think anything would change their mind.

Ha! I beat you to it - but I commented on your discussion too . I don't think it will change any minds either, but it will probably help some undecideds make up their minds.

I don't know if it will change any righties mind but it may change some Independents minds. I mean I watched the video and Powell said that he was concerned about how far right the party has gone and said something about Palin wants the party to go even more far right. Independents do not want to be far anything and as I had spent many years as an Independent I would rather be far left than far right.

I really was moved by his statements about Obama as an inclusive candidate and the Republican campaign and John McCain as a divisive force. I firmly believe that we need to have a more inclusive, leadership role in the world and get off the bully pulpit we've been riding for years.

I think it might just help some voters decide if they were still having any doubts about Sen. Obama. Colin Powell is a well respected man and his opinion may go far with undecided voters. I don't think it will much change anyone's mind. Anyway not really sure we will just have to see how people respond to this endoresement which may have come too late.

I agree that we will just have to wait and see. I don't think it will change anyone's mind either. He did talk a great deal about the strengths of an Obama administration, and about the concerns he has about the Republican campaign and the Republican party, and stated unequivocally that he has full confidence that Obama is ready to be president.
