Would you call yourself a computer addict?

If not, what do you think about them? Could computer addiction be considered an illness of some kind? What do you think are its negative side effects? Please, share your opinions.
There were times I could call myself a computer addict. I spent hundreds of hours playing online and offline games, chating, watching videos. Wouldn't sleep for 2 days in a row and so on. But when I grew older it all became just an image of the past. I think that computer addiction could be considered an ilness, because it attracts other illnesses like asthma, vision problems, lack of movement problems (like overweight, bone recession) sometimes psychic problems and other. If I'm wrong, please correct me. Thanks :)

I use the computer a lot but I think addict is a bit too strong a word. Any addiction to anything is bad and can be considered a sickness. I spend lots of time on the computer because I'm a programmer and my job requires me to be in front of the computer all day. I do take breaks of course. I think you are correct in saying that spending too much time on the computer is unhealthful. I always take a break when using the computer so that I don't develop those problems.
By the way, did you mean to say psychological problems and not psychic? :D

mohan, I don't agree with you. Most people in the world had never seen a computer at all :) And those that use computers on the average spend no more than 6 hours a day. I know lots of people that use computer 2 or 3 hours a week even if they could stay all night and day long :) Thanks for your reply and have a happy day myLotting! ;)

I think I'm an addict, but no more than most people today are (which might still be too much!)...everything is moving so fast that if you don't stay "plugged in," then you might just miss it all. I find that I can't be without access to my email for too long. I feel almost uncomfortable if I can't always be able to communicate with people in some fashion. I would say it's that I can't stand to be bored, but really it might not be a bad thing to just have some true downtime...to truly have nothing stimulating going on. It's probably healthier, but boy it makes me nervous!!! :) I guess I could use a computer rehab...now that I think about it...

I think you can only spend lot of hours on a computer which has access to the internet and without the internet you could only spend 2 or 3 hours.Maybe an internet addict would be a good good word. for me i would yes i'm internet addict i spend 16 hours per day on internet and i'm not sure about the consequencies there after, maybe health issues but i find myself addicted to something which i love and always wanted to do or to have
And maybe communication at my finger tips is the reason why i'm addicted, for my side i don't consider it an illness

Ya, I consider myself a computer addict. To be more precise, I am a game addict. I used to do what you did during young time. I have been playing games overnight and stay awake for about 48 hours. I know it's not good but I just couldn't help it. That's why I said I am addicted. Now I no longer doing this due to health concerns. In long run, we will suffer side effects of staring at the screen for too long, obesity and etc. Other than games, I am addicted to online surfing too. After I found out mylot, the time I am online is even longer LoL.

When you find a niche you're good at, you always tend to spend more time at it. Surfing online or playing games gives the feeling of satisfaction that your body requires. Hmm... I'm not sure what I'm talking about :D Anyway, thanks for your response!

You are most welcome. What you said is right, once we have found something really interest us, we will start to do it non-stop. When we are obsessed with something, we could achieve peace in our mind and obtain some kind of spiritual serenity. We will be so focused that we are able to forget all the troubles and sorrow. That's why after playing games or surfing online, I am physically wearied but mentally freshened.

Dear friend,
I do use computer a lot but at times I never use it also. Hence I feel I am not addicted. Still if the availability of time in me permits my priority to spend time goes to browsing and other works with computer. But without computer also I had learnt to spend time. Hence I am sure that I am not addicted. At times certain facilities that internet and computer provide make me to use the technological features.

Yeah I am a computer addict completely. I think i cannot be addicted to anything else other than my computer. I usually spend time surfing internet and find out someways to earn money online. But thats all useless. There is no such method where you can do a online job. YOu can just earn few bucks to buy a shirt by the end of 2 or 3 months. That too by spending alot of time, which we can spend on other outdoor job and earn alott.
What i think is that you have gone really deep into all these problems. Computer addiction can just cause vision problem. nothing else!! I dont think that asthma can be caused by computer addiction.

I'm not sure if computer really can cause asthma. But it sure can cause breathing problems. Well think about it, usually we sit in front of the computer with our back bent, this causes more weight on the chest which eventually might cause breathing problems. Thanks for your reply ;)

I'm not 'that' addicted to computers coz i need to feel alive, i mean, i have to go and walk and talk to ppl physically to feel that i'm alive. when i sit in front of the computers for long time, working, chatting, playing games i feel that i'm not 'being myself' and i'm distracted from my real life. but i've got friends who can sit in front of computers for all day, all night.....playing games. i've talked with her for so many times and it works when i drag her hands out of the room for a walk in the street, i have to pull her for shopping or just to go for a walk. that's not physically healthy for our bodies to stay sitting for so long. and it will isolate you from the real world even if you are chatting online or playing games with your mates. chatting and playing games are good, but we can always do something better like going out with friends and so on...

I always feel newly refreshed and a lot happier when I go out for a run, go out with friends and just wandering around outside than when I spend time brain-connected to a computer. That's how life should be! Sometimes I miss those times when there were no technologies.. Thanks for your reply, swanriver :)

Me too! my friend prefer to 'write' letters, sending postcards to me instead of simply sending an email and i've collected all her letters in a box. i feel that i'm keeping something precious and i really love to read her hand writing as if she is with me at the moment.
to do something like this is maybe silly in others' eyes but we enjoyed it a lot!
modern technology is good in a way to make things done faster than before, but sometimes we still enjoy the 'slow' part of life.
Dear Sandcube, I believe that you are a warm and kind person, wish you could enjoy your life more!

when you take to computers at a very young age you tend to become an addict. For a matured person computer is like an encyclopedia which can be opened when ever you need some information ior help.I open computer every dayy to check mails., write mails, put by blog in and play card games.some times I surf. In order to keep the botheration of increasing time charges away I have taken a flat unlimited scheme.

I'm not really a computer addict, i just go online when i have free time, and has nothing to do, especially when its rainy, i rather spent my free time in my, surfing the net, chatting with my friends and play online games. But i noticed that when i spent 6 to 8 hours infront of a computer, my eyes aches, and my back to, feel like i'm kinda tired and stress, some of my friends say, that computer has a radiation and its not good for the health.

The radiation generated by computer is very little. It's not the radiation that couses most eye problems. It's the not fast enough frequency rate of pictures per second and the focusing of eyes while reading or watching things on the monitor that makes eyes ache. Playing action games is actually less dangerous than reading online books. Thanks for your response! ;)

Everything we do must come with a wise mind. We are in control of what we want to do, in other words we are the sole decision maker for our own self. I sit in front of a computer more that 5 hours per day but that doesn't make me an addict because every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) I make sure that it is a family gathering day and I try to minimize the involvement of myself with the computer. Usually on Saturday I only spend half the day on the computer and on Sunday I don't touch the computer unless there is something very important to do or if my family is not around and I don't know what else to do.
I have to be connected to the internet not because of the entertainment purposes, even though I admit that the entertainment comes as a bonus and I too play games through the internet. I am doing small businesses through the internet and that's why I have to be connected always.

I totally agree with you. Our heads are made for thinking and not just for bumping on they keyboard to wake the body up after long hours of computer usage. Making breaks from a computer is a wise idea indeed. I do a break every once in a hour. Play a guitar, sing a little, catch a snack, walk around and voila, I'm all refreshed! :) Of course, day outs are the best for our health. Thanks for your response, ladysurvivor. Have a nice day! ;)

I would rather think of myself as an enlightened computer user. While other people might consider themselves computer addicts, I do consider myself as a user of computers who knows what he is doing. Cheers!!

You are not wrong. What you are saying makes a lot of sense. For me, I can call myself a computer addict. But then, on the other hand, I cannot get things done without using a computer, things that my job requires me to do. I have to do a lot of research work online for the business activities I have to take care of in my Company. That's a lot of work and needs many hours a day on the computer.

Thanks for your response, greenline. It's good to know that someone agrees with my ideas :) And I understand that job with computers could be a killer. Actually, I study Electronic Systems and there's not a single subject which wouldn't need computer :/ however, I seem to complete most tasks quite fast, so no big damage done to my health :) the future doesn't look so good, though. Have a nice day myLotting! ;)

I consider my self a computer addict and all of the above mentioned habits. I love my computer it is my friend and it keeps me from getting bored, there is always something to do on the computer. I have to start doing some exercise in the future, because I will be out of job soon and I know it will not be good to just sit here on this computer day and night.

I would say that yes I am addicted to the computer. I am addicted to working and email and certain forums. Especially addicted to MyLot! I am overweight but that is not caused by the computer. The computer does not help it but the computer did not cause it. I do tear myself away from it after work and get on with family things after everyone gets home. I do tear myself away during the day so that I can cook, clean and look after the animals. Addicted but would survive without it.

I am addicted to my computer! I am not overweight though, and although i have mild asthma, this is nothing to do with computing.
Asthma is an often hereditary condition, and a bit of exercise everyday is good.
I go swimming every Monday, this hopefully keeps me in top condition.
Happy myLotting!

Hmm... I forgot the fact that computer addicts don't really eat much and some of them drink lots of coffee to keep their eyes open which contains coffeine that lessens their weight :\ So overweight might not be one of the main problems. I agree, asthma often is hereditary, but not always. Yes, a little exercise is a must ;) Thanks for your reply and have a nice day! :)

I believe computers as a way for people (like me) to escape from their real world. In my case, I dislike getting physical or socializing in person, I feel less confident. But on the computer, on the internet, I feel more freedom, I feel more happy, better to express my feelings and I find my fun and happiness here.
Would I call myself a computer addict? yes, it is pretty hard for me to get through a day without using the computer. But, I've done it a couple of times when I went out traveling. And yes, do get a good chair if you plan to be sit for long hours!
