I just signed up for National Novel Writing Month! (NaNoWriMo)

I have to say I'm more than a little nervous. I have to write 50,000 words in 30 days. They have counters and everything. I've never done this before so I've gotten someone to "adopt" me to help me through it. Today I wrote out a pretty good plot line using a short story I wrote as the starting point. Of course, I can't count those words, only what I write starting November 1. Has anyone else out there done this? How far along are you with planning? Are you going to do a banner and/or cover?

Good luck to you (and all who are taking part this year)! And a word of advice; remember, 50,000 sounds like a lot. Don't think of it as 50,000 but as a certain amount each day or each 48 hours. 1666 (ominous number!) a day or 3332 in 48 hours is almost nothing. You wrote close to 100 words in your little post... so think how easy it is to write a couple of thousand. I wrote 24,000 words in a week once... I was feeling very antisocial, lol. I've never taken part in NaNoWriMo, though for the last few years I have thought about it. I was lacking in ideas and was always working on something else that was part way through or close to completion. That and combining NaNo with university is a little challenging! This year though, I've had some things boiling in the back of my mind for a few months that really need me to sit down and write them. Perhaps NaNo is just the thing I need to get them off the ground. I'd have a few days less than everyone else though; my birthday celebrations are more important than NaNo

Thank you! And congratulations on the Birthday(s). I know what you mean. Mine is right smack in the middle: November 15th. I wasn't thinking about that; but then again, what a great birthday present to me to finish a draft of a novel!

Another November baby *waves* Happy birthday to you, and thanks to Anthingart :) Well, I signed up :) Took longer than it should have because my connection went funny. I'm now perusing the forums and persuading friends on MSN to sign up. If nothing else this is going to be a bit of silly fun.

Well I'm doing what they recommend before the competition - tell everyone you know that you are doing it so shame at least will keep you going. :-)

I'm doing NaNo for the third time this year. I've never finished, but I hope to this year. It's a lot of work, but it can be fun, especially if you don't get too seriou about it. The forums have lots of great advice, and having buddies can really be a big help for some people. I've been working on my novel since August, and have loads of notes, and a sort of outline for the first six chapters, so I feel pretty confident about it. Good luck to you.

Thanks! Good luck to you too. I'm just now doing my outlines. I've changed plots twice. I decided to go with something new after all instead of the one I already started.

Congratulations. I have never done NaNoWriMo, but my husband managed to do four years worth before we married. Since then life has been crazy and now we have a two year old. I am hoping that we can both do it next year. Good Luck and don't forget to have fun!

Thank you so much! I'm actually getting really excited. I'm doing a little outlining and some research so I don't make any really big blunders. Congratulations to your husband! That's great. I hope you both get to do it soon.

ohhh that starts in like 11 days!!! how can I sign up? and do I have to count the words manually? I have like 80,000,000 novel ideas (ok way total exageration, I have maybe 3) But I think I know which one I want to do, Lucky me Ive been working on the mapping system, and have been pounding out a lot of the plotline in the past year, hopefully I can at least get a first draft out :D 50,000 words... hmmmm... I'm assuming you can do more... but... is there a free software you think I could get that would work for win 98? does anybody know if I could? thanks for posting I had TOTALLY forgotten about NaNoWriMo

I think she wrote two books, one after the other. Several people have done that. I'm not sure if it was her, but somebody said that when they ran out of ideas on one nove, they would go to the other one for a while. You have to be a very good typist, and have your ideas pretty well developed, but it can be done. I'll be glad just to get one written. I have an idea for another one, but that's for next year.
