Why are French Fries called French Fries?

Does anyone know the history of French Fries? and why they are call French Fries? I often time wonder why French Fries are so called, does the French have an history in its creation and why couldn't it be called Fried Potato Strips? I will nominate to have the name change to Fried Potato Strips. Someone please help me as to why it is so called.

hi friend, it was Thomas Jefferson who started the word. French people say that it is from belgium . God knows where it actually is from.

I always thought it was because of the "french" cut of the potatoe. You know like french style green beans have that longer cut to them. I have no facts to back that but that is just what I always thought for some reason! Have a great day!

According to wikipedia. it was Thomas Jefferson who started the term French fries because he had been fond of French dishes.
