How often do you have your pet checked by a vet?

I go to the vet if something is wrong. If I had a dog or cat, I'd probably go in for yearly check ups because they blood work can be run and all of that good stuff. But all my pets are "exotics" and typically their exam is something I can easily do at home. Although it does help that I've had a lot of experience and I'm a pre-vet student. Not everyone recognizes signs of illness on their own. But unfortunately, with exotics, if you can't notice an illness early it is often too late.

My kitties are my babies, and since I believe in preventative medicine for me, they get it too. We go for a once a year checkup even if nothing seems to be wrong. Cats are experts at hiding illness so better safe than sorry I say--especially since I would love for them to live to be 20 years old.

I don't take my pet for regular check-ups as I don't see the point of it when the animal is completely fine. I only take it to the vet when it's sick and I feel suspicious that something is wrong.
