Why do people do really stupid things?

Like, I don't understand why anyone would risk dying by tying a rope around their neck in hopes that it will make them get high. Plus, who jumps from a three story building hoping to land in a pool? I think the lack of common sense doesn't trigger the "This is very stupid" warning.
