This past month, our electric bill was $175.
Today, we got our new electric bill and it was only $93.00!
What a savings!
The only thing we've done different this past month was to
unplug the computer during the day
and evening when it's not in use.
And, I think it really made
a difference.
But, other than that, I don't know why our electric
bill would be so low.
I'd love to save even more money on the next electric bill.
Do you have any money saving tips for keeping electric
bills low?

That's great BQ!! The only thing I can suggest is to unplug your television set, too, because many of them draw electricity while they're turned off so they can come on quicker. Also make sure you A/C or furnace filters are replaced regularly and use energy saving light bulbs.

Those are super tips!
I had not thought to change out
the regular light bulbs for ones that save energy.
It's such a little thing.
But I'll bet it makes a real difference!

Wow! My electric bill was way higher than anyone else's listed on here and I will not even say how high.
After reading this discussion I am going to unplug the toaster and the food processor right now. Then I am going to power the surge protectors off at night for the televisions and computers while we sleep. Then I think I will look for those energy efficient light bulbs.
I already wash my darks in cold water. I do however wash my whites in hot to make sure they get nice and clean. I sure hope I can cut down on my electricity bill somewhat.
Thanks for all the great tips!
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

Thanks for the tips. I'll try those.
I started unplugging electrical appliances, VCRs, TVs, etc.
and my computer after I found out that they still draw
electricity even after they're cut off.
That means you pay, even when you're not using the item.
They have to be unplugged from the wall to stop drawing
electricity.
Seems a waste to me.
There are tons of ways I could use
that extra $80!

Wow, that was a big difference. Do you have air conditioning? That may make a difference. I do think the less that is plugged in, the better off you are.

That is an awesome savings! I haven't ever thought about unplugging things to save on the electric bill. I leave my hairdryers plugged in all day along with my appliances. I am going to give it a try. We usually leave the computer on all day and night~ even when we aren't using it. Just think about that electricity we will be saving.

That's an amazing save. I can't believe that computer will use quite a lot of electricity. Actually I am not so sure how much of our electricity fee. As it will be paid by our bank account automatically. I just need to deposit some money inside after some time. This is why I don't pay attention to the electricity charge. I know it's not a good habit.
I love China

That is amazing, I am going to start doing that from now on.. We are gone most of the day and sometimes most of the evening but we never even turn off the computer, much less unplug it.. I usually leave it on all of the time, I have Comcast but I go on with Aol, and it is always on.. I am going to try this starting today because even being gone most of the time and just my husband and myself living in the house, our utility bill has been 175.00 a month.. That is unreal, I can't wait to start saving.. Now how much can I save if I turn off my tv, I usually leave it on for the dog to watch during the day, so it is never turned of either.. I am not kidding, my husband always says to leave the tv on so the dog will have something to listen to, so I just leave it on automatically.. I fuss and cuss about my utility bill but I don't do anything to save on it, I will now.. Thanks for the tip..

that's great but don't really understand why unplugging your computer would make such a difference.

that was really big savings for your electric bill. i could not believe that your computer could consume so much energy. i thoguht that cmoputer is one of the low energy consuming appliance we have at hom. i was wrong. and so i will now remember to turn the cmputer off when it's not in use. hopefully it will save me money as much as you ahve saved in your home.

Saving almost half of your electricity bill by unplugging one computer while not in use is impossible. I would look elsewhere for a reason for the savings. Electrical items in standby can use up to ten percentage of your electric bill, so you would have to unplug all your electrical items such as your computer, television, etc. to even approach a ten percentage saving.
You can save that standby electrical use, and it is easier, by putting items on a power bar that has a switch or even a timer.

Well done! My last electricity bill was for $150 but before that it was $170, the electricity bill was billed every quarterly. Although it was not much but every cent counts, and I can use the money that I have saved for much needed priorities. I use energy saving bulbs on almost every light inside the house but I still turned it off when I don't use it. I rarely watch television so I prefer not to leave the television and DVD player unit on standby, so I switch it off at the powerpoint. When I don't use the internet I turned off the broadband modem. When my computer is turned on for downloading however I got to turn off the LCD monitor when I'm not using it, after the download is complete then my computer will be automatically turned off. For the past fortnight that I've reduced playing computer so that means next electricity bill will hopefully be cheaper. Probably later this year or next year that I would switch electricity company for a better one that offers discount if I pay the bill on time :)

Hey congratulations on your savings!! et you are well chuffed!! I'm not one for unplugging things, especially the computer as on my days off I tend to flitter on and off it. I think if I was to unplug things, I would have to label the plug so that I know what to unplug when not in use as there are a few plugs around the computer area.
Congratulations on your savings, well done!!

That is great to hear.. I keep all the lights off in the daytime. I only use them when I really need them on.. If I use my stove to cook on, it is no more than twice a week. We just eat whatever food that I have cooked for that week.. Our electric bill seems to be very low at times too. I remember one time, our electric bill was $82.00. I used to have me an energy saver on my air conditioner. That saved up so much during those hot summers. That is great that you can save the way you are doing! I don't blame you for saving, the lesser, the better!

The cost of our electricity has recently taken a nose dive. We are used to seeing our bills at over $200 a month. This past summer it was closer to $100. It is nice, but I'm afraid of what the winter will bring while running the furnace all day and night.

Unplugging may be the answer. I was watching Ophra, and she had a lady on who stated that her electric bill was so much lower because she started unpluggin all appliances that were not being used. She said even though the appliance was not being used, if it was still plugged in, it was generating electric.
I am going to try this and see if my bill gets lower, I think you have the right idea.
