I have a 5 yr old female cat and I adopted a 3 yr old female. I am having problems with them adjusting. I don't know if things are getting better or not. They both will come near me together but they hiss and growl at each other. My 5yr old will not let the other cat near any of the food. Is this normal?

You just have to give it a little time. Your five year old is establishing her dominance and place in the house. After a while, when the three year old learns that the five year old is the alpha female, things will settle down. Your five year old cat is also letting the three year old know that you are her person. Once they have rules established about territory and you, the growling and hissing will quit.
I got a male Maine Koon cat and it took nearly a year for my little spayed female to accept the male into the house. She still lets him know who's boss, but they get along much better. The funny thing is the Maine Koon cat came into the house and you could tell he fell madly in love with my female, she's Siamese and a real looker! (LOL) I still see the Maine Koon watching the little girl with those eyes that get the doofy "I am sooo crushing on you" look.
Just kick back and don't worry, the cats will work things out...it's natural.

how have you gone about introducing them?
If you just dropped the newcomer into the older cat's area, she is responding normally.
shut the new cat into her own area for a few days and slowly intoduce them, makes the transistion better
I'd write how to do it, but I don't have time right now
