Are you one of those people with an "Appliance Graveyard" at home?

You get what I mean right? lol. We get all caught up in the online shopping networks or see some new shiny appliance at the store that we believe at the time will absolutely revolutionize our way of life and then we use it once or twice and it then gets stuffed into a cupboard for eternity!
Sandwich makers, bread makers, omelette makers, blenders, pie makers..... The list is endless! So do you have an appliance graveyard at home yourself or are you one of these rare people that actually get continued use out of appliances you buy?

lol...
'Appliance graveyard' is my thing James. I used to have a lot of those lying all over the places until my mom got me a storage at the attic. And guess what, what a mess of gadgets and appliances and money it is!! Some times I wonder, DID I REALLY BUY IT! DID I REALLY HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY!!...Many are gifted as well.
What a waste it is! Its full of obsolete gadgets, tight from pagers to CPUs, to palm tops, to defunct DCs. Then there are toasters, sandwich makers, hair dryers, epilators, mixers-grinders, juicers and even old irons!! It's a graveyard in the true sense. Sometimes I digg into it to find out more defunct ones so that I can get rid of those. But some more adds on! It's constantly replenishing!
What alarming is the huge waste of money! May be the global slump would deter me from buying reckless.

If you allow me, I am expanding it to 'gadget graveyard' as well.

Your Mom gave you attic storage? If that is not an open invitation to buy more appliances due to all this extra space then I don't know WHAT is! I am sure the companies that make these products know damn well that people will buy them and then forget about them. This is probably why they keep on coming up with all these new and improved versions. Oddly enough I KNOW this epilator you are referring to as well. Man those things hurt! I doubt that anyone that has ever bought one of those things ended up using it more than once. Well, maybe alok has but most people, no. Thanks for responding.

Applaince graveyard ! I think i would most aptly call my home an applaince tomb ,where i can still see valve radios, record payers, amplifiers cassete players, toasters, cordless phones..maybe even call it a junkyard. The thing here is James both my brother and Dad are in the line of electronics and theri hobby ranges from servicing to building new designs from of amplifiers, speaker designs to testing equipment. And the strange part of it is that nothing ever leaves the house. It just goes on accumulating and accumulating. Then there are those spare parts boxes full of them , most of them obsolete. Can you imagine those valves which were used in the radios. I mean other then display them in a museum what use would they be of today . I've tried time and again to convince these two to get some of it but nope , just cannot convince them to. I guess will be mumified along with them one day.
And yes i would use them for anything possible that i can and now i'm training my nephew on this.

Oh! Once again you have managed to take this to an entirely new level alok! I had a friend who's Father was in a similar line of business and their back garden resembled a scrap yard! Nothing worked and most things were damaged beyond repair but all were kept on that off chance that one day somebody would need it! lol. And this obsession is beiong passed on even further down the family line too then? Give it another 20 years or so and you will have an antique store on your hands! Thanks for sharing this.

Until June I had a gadget, appliance and car graveyard. We had a 96 Lincoln and 96 Jeep Cherokee that ran. Then there were the non running cars. A 93 Buick Regal, and 89 Honda Prelude and an 89 Honda Accord. Why? Because my husband had to have all this stuff including the sandwich makers, etc.. Going to fix them up, might use it once every five months, might need the spare parts from that computer that was 10 years old. What changed? He left for Iraq and I cleaned house! :)
We are down to one car, no gadgets, no spare obsolete electronic parts, no appliances that don't get used. But hey, atleast now I can use my garage!

Well if you are gonna have a graveyard stryker you may as well have a good one. Champion effort! But you overcame the hoarding demons it seems and are reaping the benefits. It's amazing how long some people will hold on to things just on the off chance that one day they may need it! Thanks for repsonding.

Of course I do, Darlin. But, they are not in the house, they are out in the yard. Old refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, washing machines, dryers. And not just appliances, we have a couple of old toilets, a sink or two, 3 or 4 bath tubs. Not to mention 3 old cars that are nothing but shells.
Hey, I am a Texan, we are all a bunch of red neck, hillbillies, doncha know?
Just kidding, that drives me crazy to see something like that.
I do have a couple of things under the counters that I don't use. But, I didn't buy them, they were given to me as gifts. I used them two or three times, and decided that it was easier for me to do things the old fashion way.*L*

Hi James, its nice you have started but really i am not like so. I invest and buy those which is regularly being used by me and if its for just grace and then i really wont even think to buy as the decision of buying is in my hands but still the dreaming of buying is in family members.

Hi rkrish. Thankfully this is an older behaviour of mine as I don't have any appliances at all these days! But I have noticed many people doing the same thing so thought I would discuss it. It is good that you have the discipline to only buy what you really WILL use regularly as so many of us get caught up in all the hype instead. lol. Thanks for the response.

Tread lightly, James... I wish you'd pay more respect to a graveyard and all those lovely appliance souls in it who may or may not have lived their lives to the fullest (use). Boyfriend got me the Magic Bullet because it would be the infomercial I'd be watching over and over again at 2am when I can't sleep. He also got me a blender and a baking mixer, both of which haven't seen much use lately. We have Foreman's grill but it still is in its box. Now, I'm eyeing the Nu-wave! Poor soul.

I shall try to be more respectful SaintAnne and at least tip my hat when I walk past one. If only I actually wore a hat though..... Hmmmm. I see you are a sucker for the infomercials then? Scary stuff I tell you! If I was you I would use the Magic Bullet to shoot the TV screen next time one of these shows are on. As for the Nu-Wave, I don't even know what that is? You wanna cure yourself of buying this crap? Buy an epilator! Thanks for the response.

We have very few appliances and that is the way I like it. We have the normal blender, microwave, sandwich maker, hand blender, toaster and crockpot. That is about it here. I hand things down to my kids when I dont want it no longer and if they dont want something it goes to the Salvation Army or somewhere else that it can be given or boughten for someone elses use.

Another disiplined appliance collector..... There are more of you than I thought! So many of us are the complete opposite and just hoard them one afte the other. Giving all our unused appliances to others is a great way to control the number. Thanks for the response Ithink.

Hahaha! Well, we have some hand me down appliances at home but still works though. Like the baking oven that my dad bought from his friend, still at its good condition and still useful so I don't think it's a part of the graveyard list, lol. Some are old yeah but not one of those appliances that are just... there. Most of our really really old appliances have been given away and have been thrown away also since they can't be fixed anyway. Some of our appliances have been bought just a few years ago so it's all good!

There have been a few references to hand-me-downs now! Before you know it, families of the future could have generations of appliances with no end in sight! lol. I do not have any at the moment myself but I undoubtedly will end up buying a few when I settle back home eventually. I just have to try to be disciplined! Thanks for the response gegegelay.

I was like that once but now I cannot afford to buy lots of appliances so I am trying to hand on to my old ones for as long as possible. We do still have a few old appliances hanging around but we got rid of a lot of stuff when we moved.
Moving is great for dumping things you really have no use for anymore.

LOL Mine is an appliance hell because it seems once they enter my house, they are destined to break and/or die. As far as buying appliances I don't need, I usually resist the urge to buy them. I can honestly say that I use about 99.4% of the appliances that I have bought (as long as they still work that is)

I have never bought any of those things. My husbands aunt one the other hand use to buy every single thing!
She ended up giving me a rotisserie! One that you can see it going around and a around.. With the idea that you set it and forget it.. I love to watch it LOL.... how is that saving any time? LOL

This sounds like the ideal scenario to me Louise. You get to go to your Aunt's, use all the appliances and then leave them there. All the fun without the graveyard potential! lol. I think that although all these companies that make these appliances rave on about the "set it and forget it" benefits the emphasis is mainly on the "forget it" part! They know we wil lose interest and keep buying more. Thanks for the response.

I have a couple of them in a graveyard, when I bought them I thought they were the appliance that I just had to have now they are stuffed in a closet, a cabinet wherever I could find room for it. I have some that are really handy. I try to stay out the appliance area now.

No I do not get continued use out of appliances I buy, but i do dispose off unservicable gadgets in the junk yard. I do not collect unservicable items at home. There is no space to store junk at home.
