I think the method they used to teach us English (not my mother tongue) back when I was in kindergarten is pretty effective. I was four years old back then but I ended up understanding english quite well, so well that today I am the best of my school in the subject.
Well, here's the deal; all they did was give us childish notebooks, where we outline dotted letters and numbers, while orally telling us what that is called, and making us repeat the letter/number and after that say a few words that start with that letter. It was the same with the tests only had no teacher assistance. It's a perfect way for teaching little ones. Also, speaking with them often in English will get them to understand it quickly, even if they're just toddlers that don't even know how to read and write. My little niece and nephew are really good at speaking and understanding english, my niece's english understanding is almost on the level of our mother tongue even; because she's spoken with in english on a daily basis, she started speaking in english since she was two and now at four she's pretty good! we can't talk in english so she wouldn't understand anymore! lol

I used to teach my son at early stage. I bought the Dr.Seuss title cause it teaches them english at the very first stage. My mother tongue is not english so sometime I tlaked to him slowly in english whenever I got the time to do that.lol.

Hi! Im from the Philippines and our mother tongue is Tagalog(Central Luzon especially National Capital Region). I have watched something about learning two language at the same time. The key is that one of the parent teach and speak with the child only one language(eg. english) at least until the child can express himself using that language and the other parent use only another language(eg. german) same period covered as the other. Learning a language is best to start in infancy because as I have watched another documentary, hearing is best when we are certain months old or so(I forgot the exact age). If ever a child never gone through this process, I heard another resource that before introducing another language, try to explain it using the language that child understand(learning the language through the aid of another). Try of immitate the native speaker when talking to a baby.
