most people will deny the relationship between the music talent and a relatively rich background or good parentage, as a great number of musicians lived poor life when they were alive, for their remarkable works were only accepted and appreaciated after their death and many popular singers especiall rock and blus stars in America used to be in the bottom of the society or just wander in the counrty all year long. however, the population who could play instrument, especially piano and violin some are regarded as classic and a sign of well-educated, has some connection with the abundance of her country. simply enough, well-educated people prefer to let their children get the art training and more important they can afford such a kind of spiritual education. intellectuals intend to do that, partly influenced by their traditional pedagogy, while people swift to rich attempt to treat their own children in that way to cultivate the noble status and shed the title as only rich in material. that is why a piece of news delineating the great change Iraq suffered said that many people could play the piano, but now numerous students dropped out of school, indicating the bad condition between two generations.
the background does has a great influence on the possibility for children to have access to instrument, especially the expensive one.nonetheless, it seems quiet fair that muscians come from different levle of society and more pleasing, everyone can enjoy the delight brought by diverse of instrument, ranging from grand harp from self-made flute.
so what is matters is how to do your best to enjoy the music and creat music in your own condition, just as everyone can singing joyfully regardless others comments, beacuse there is no difference in the status of instruments.remember beautiful music derives from the art itself and heart of yourself.

There used to be a pattern of failed artists/art students that went on to become musicians.

I think your observations are somewhat correct. If you're poor, you probably won't have the money to afford an instrument, much less any lessons.
However, most middle class people can afford a violin or an electric keyboard or something similar. Yet there are still some instruments that people usually only play if they are more wealthy. A good example would be the harp. Harps are very expensive and unless you're fairly well off, you probably don't play one. I've wanted to learn the harp before, but I can't afford one. I could however, afford an autoharp, so that's what I know how to play.
Even the poorest of people can usually afford something though if they really want to play music. You can get a decent harmonica for under $10 and make some excellent music on that.
