Hey all of you computer scientists! I'm a highschool senior at the moment, half-way through finishing the first semester.. not much left until I go to college and I wannah specialize in BSc Computer Science. Well, here's the thing; I just need to know just how hard -or at least how high leveled- the math studies in this field are. To be honest with you, I still haven't reached my maximum capabilities in maths and don't quite know my limit in it yet since I don't practice it much, so I need some info about this so I can train myself and ready myself for what's to come. Anyone willing to help me out here?

It all depends on the course and the university as everyone is different. Generally speaking, I found the degree a hell of a lot easier than doing my A Levels, but I think this was due to actually having an interest in the subjects covered within my degree over what I did at A Level. Maths is important when it comes to programming, you need to be able to logically work through a given problem while working in an abstract semi-mathamatical fashion, so, although Maths important, excellent Maths is probably not so important as long as you are able to work with formulae and algibra. A logical way of thinking, of working through problems, is a lot more beneficial than any single specific skill from a given subject as long as you are able to apply your basic Maths principles to the task at hand. At the end of the day, you get out what you put in, so if you do everything you are asked to do within the lectures and seminars, you'll pass. Hope that helps :) It's just my honest opinion from when I did my BSc in Computing a few years back.

yeah, thanks for your reply ^w^ At class, I never understand a thing of what my teacher says (currently studying algebra O.o), but at home when I study it by myself I understand it so well I start thinking I might be a genius D= so am not sure of just how well I can do with it.. I realize that programming requires some math but more importantly logical problem processing, which I actually possess in a high rate- I often find myself solving difficult math problems in the correct way, even if not come up with the right answer; since I didn't even know what I was doing in the first place, lol. I just need some reassurance of how easy/difficult the math in the course is -w- that's all, since the college am trying to enroll in for next year has the entire second semester of the first year mainly for math subjects, especially algebra. So I needed some rechecking D= am scared!

I would say not to worry about it. Although the uni will expect you to have a certain level of intelligence to study there, the course itself will start with the lowest common demnominator, IE, the lowest level of understanding that they expect anyone who has been allowed onto the course to be at. In my first year I was pretty cocky as I thought I knew it all, as I was good with computers for my age, and I suffered for that because before I knew what had happened I was behind everyone else on the course and played catch up until I graduated. Even if it appears to be very simple to begin with, don't let that fool you into thinking it's always going to be that way, because it isn't. It will increase in difficulty very quickly if you do not pull your weight when outside of lectures. When I started my degree, it was split into 2 groups, 90 students in total, by the end, around 30 graduated - the ones that dropped out were those that partied all the time, went to all the student union drinking parties and did not study!
