I want to know why people like her and why they think she is ready to be the Vice President. The Daily Show went to the town she was the mayor of, and asked the current mayor if she thought that the job of mayor prepared Sarah to be the VP. The current mayor said that she thought it did, and then they asked her why. She couldn't list a single reason. They asked her what responsibilities the mayor had, and all she could come up with was on Monday she signed checks and Thursday they had a staff meeting. What do people see in her?

She said Monday staff meeting, Thursday checks.
Nitpick. :)
And that mayor said that Wasilla handles no social services at all. I found that to be pretty weird, but maybe that's common in really small towns? I don't know.

Sarah Palin plunged Wasilla into debt in six short years.
I direct you to Wasilla's Certified Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year of 2003: http://www.cityofwasilla.com/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=471
From there, I direct you to Table 10 of the Report, located on page 124 of the above .pdf document.
Under "Bonded Long-Term Debt", let's see what it says for 2003:
$18,635,000. That translates to just shy of $3,000 of debt per person.
Now I'll direct you to footnote (1), in which it is stated that Wasilla had NO long-term debt before 1998, two years into Palin's mayorship.
Wasilla went from zero long-term debt in 1996, to over $18.5 million in debt in 2002 when Palin left (the fiscal year for 2003 begins in October 2002).

Didn't Wasilla grow from a population of 5,000 to 9,000 when she was there? Didn't they want some sports complex that cost over 14 million dollars? Isn't that what part of the debt is for? There was also $1-million for a park. She also supported bonds for $5.5-million for road projects.
[i]"Current Mayor Diane M. Keller, who served on the City Council when Palin was mayor, said just presenting those raw figures is misleading.
Yes, she said, Wasilla’s budgets increased and tax receipts went up under Palin’s reign, but much of that was due to the growth of the city during those six years.
Yes, she said, the sales tax rate went from 2 percent to 2.5 percent under Palin, but that was approved via voter referendum, with the extra proceeds earmarked specifically to pay off that sports complex. CBS News reported that the referendum on the sports complex passed by just 20 votes.
Due to the economic growth in the community, Keller said, Wasilla is going to be able to stop charging that extra .5 percent sales tax two years earlier than anticipated.
The property tax rate was reduced under Palin from 2 mills to .5 mills (it was later eliminated under Keller).
Voters also okayed the bond issue to pay for road improvements, Keller noted.
“The people in our community wanted road improvements,” Keller said. “The taxpayers voted on it. Same thing with the sports complex. It’s up to us to do what the people are asking for.”
The U.S. Census does not provide yearly population estimates before 2000, but Wasilla’s population grew by about 13 percent in the last two years of Palin’s mayorship alone. It stands to reason that a town’s budget will grow as the population rises.
And if voters okayed the bond issues for the sports complex and road projects, as well as for the sales tax increase, we think it’s a little misleading to pin them entirely on the mayor, even if she did lobby for them."

And so did you read what I posted? The people of Wasilla voted on all of this stuff and approved it. They'll get the debt paid off. You betcha!

I've said this before and gotten spanked for it but here goes - I don't like her and I sure don't think she's ready to be V.P. at all and current national polls back me up. Palin is seen as the biggest drag on the McCain campaign according to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Heck, she STILL doesn't even know what the V.P. is supposed to do and thinks she can go run the Senate and change policy!

Exactly why would you say Biden doesn't know what the V.P.'s job is, Taskr, you've puzzled me with this one. I know he doesn't think he can go make policy as President of the Senate and I know he will be "ready on day one", if needed, to take over as President. And he didn't cost the DNC $150,000 for clothes...lol!

I think tht a lot of people found their political super star in Sarah from the Frozen North and they are bound and deermined to protect her from every little thing including the hard (and sometimes easy) questions.
Someone on a thread on here a while ago stated that that little town she mayored had about 5,000 people. I don't know if that was true or not but if it is it is laughable. Here outside Philadelphia, mayors of little towns like that would not be considered serious candidates for mayor of Philadelphia much less Vice Pres. In fact, some little towns with populations that low have figurehead mayors that are appointed merely to represent the town in parades and such.

I'm a bit further than just outside Philadelphia, but I know the mayor of my town which is twice the size Wasilla was when Sarah was mayor is only a part-time employee and gets paid a couple thousand a year. We don't have as many parades as we used to but I'm not even sure if he takes part in them anymore.

Did the Daily Show do like they usually do and set off to embarrass someone? I hope Stewart's kids grow up to be conservatives. Now that would be great some Karma!
She grew up poor in a house that only had a wood heater. She's tough and hunts and dresses a moose and catches and cleans fish. She worked her way through school. She and her high school sweetheart eloped so her parents wouldn't have to pay for a fancy wedding.I admire Sarah Palin because she didn't like things that were happening in her town and she did something about it. She put her son in a wagon and pulled him around from door to door campaigning.
I like her because she started at the bottom and has worked her way to the top. It reminds me of the American Dream. I admire her stand on abortion even deciding to keep her baby, Trig, when she knew he had Down Syndrome. She proved that she not only talked the talk but walked the walk. I like how she brings her kids with her when she can. I like that she has a lot of energy. I think she's one tough lady. She's obviously got a good sense of humor and proved it by being on SNL. She's a good sport. She's charming. And I might add that she is not that bad to look at either.
I like how she shops at Walmart for diapers and takes the time to shake hands and have photos taken with people. I like how she took on the oil companies and the others in her party. I don't think she is stupid and that others are selling her way too short.
She has been more than a mayor of Wasilla. She is the governor of Alaska, by gosh! Bill Clinton was the governor of Arkansas when he became president. Bush was the governor of Texas. Even her Democrat mother in law says she's a quick learner. She'll get daily briefings as vice president. She'll learn as she goes.
And I'd also like to add that I am mad about the hatefulness that she first encountered by the left and the media and from the kooky celebrities. The more they hate on her the more I like her.
One thing that totally surprises me and dismays me is the reaction to her by other females. OK, she isn't Hillary but she is a smart, ambitious woman who has a chance to break through the glass ceiling and get us one step closer to the presidency.

By the way, I might ask the same thing about Barack Obama. What makes him ready to be president?

I like her drive, and I like her morals, I would like you all to tell me what being a senater (seeing as the other three people in the race are all senaters) prepares them for president or vice president, I would also like you to tell me what a vice president does, I'm serious, she seems that when she has a passion for something she will fight for it, and her morals (in my opinion) will drive her passion in the right place, and her place in government plus her relationship with God would likely keep her from trampling too many rights (considering how many each president tramples, I have a fair ammountof faith in her) Truth is, Intelligence and a drive to succeed is whats going to count, because you can have all the experience in the world and never get anything done because you believe it cant be done, and on the flipside you can have pure intelligence and passion and get it done because you dont know it cant be done. simple as that.

She hasnt voted to take away the free choice in alaska, so OTHER than her personal beliefs (which she has stated but swallowed till now) WHAT if ANYTHING do you have to suggest that she would take out the rights internationally? name ONE THING in her VOTING RECORD that says she will take away free choice?

Well she is the governor of Alaska, people voted for her there. And she will learn how to be vice-president like everyone before her. So stop nitpicking. So I should ask why are you so for Biden and consequently for Obama who will take away the right to bear arms, make America into a socialist country, is so far left abortion that is not funny.
Oh people like her because she unlike most women in politics is not pro-abortion and has strong moral values.

Well, considering she is the only one on the 2 tickets I would cast a vote for, it's a shame she isn't on the top of one of them. But she isn't, so I'm still voting for Chuck Baldwin -(Constitution party).
Why is it that everyone connveniently forgets she is a GOVERNOR. They mention mayor, but not governor, as if it means nothing. Was not Bill clinton a Governor? Was not George Bush a governor? Was not Ronald Reagan a governor? Jimmy Carter? In fact, the last time we elected a senator directly to the office of presidency, was JFK. Why is this? Simple, Governors have more administrative and executive experience than senators. Running a state is equivivilent to running a small country. Many of the same offices exist, many of the same responsabilities. Even being commanders of a small military force in the shape of national guard (though it can be federaly highjacked), state guard and state militias (which can't be). Now granted they don't generaly commit these troups to war but the authority does exist.
I like her guts, her commitment to state's rights, she is a person I identify with as "regular people", she's not even married to a politician or lawyer, he works for a living.

"and when she was picked to be the VP, she had only been the governor for a couple of months."
*Change "months" to years....she is finishing her second year
"Plus, as a governor, she was horribly corrupt."
*Change this to "HATED by the horribly corrupt"
"The bridge to nowhere that she didn't support, they got the money anyway and never gave it back, yet there is no bridge. Seems strange."
*Nothing strange, the money went to other state projects.
Doesn't matter to me anyway, I'm not voting for either MooooCain or Ob-ah-ah-ah-ma.

I don't think that I would use the political past of George Bush to try and support someone else's campaign, and when she was picked to be the VP, she had only been the governor for a couple of months. Plus, as a governor, she was horribly corrupt. The bridge to nowhere that she didn't support, they got the money anyway and never gave it back, yet there is no bridge. Seems strange.

I was initially impressed with Ms. Palin however when Charlie Gibson from ABC news asked her about the Bush Doctrine she didn't even know what it was.... need I say more in regards to her ability to act as Vice President.
