Who was the best writer

Well I think within the Beatles they were equal and excelled in their own ways. You can especially see this on the white album. Like you said I think Paul's songs were catchier and had better melodies but as far as just raw expression I think John is better. It's strange to me how much John's sound changed after the Bealtes though. I mean sure he wrote songs like Working Class Hero but for the most part his songs seemed much darker (and better in my opinion) in the 60's and then through the 70's his songs got soft. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I love the John Lennon "Rock and Roll" album though. I think that's Lennon at his best doing what he loves
