Help. I'm having a problem with this new cat and digging up my carpet. I take her paws and wipe them on the scratching post like I'm suppose to and she screams and jerks away. Then goes back to digging in the carpet. This kept happening every 3 min during the day. Do I just keep continuing until she gets it. the cat is 3 yrs old but, I don't know if the prior home she just did what she wanted

well one problem is, sometimes cats cant see the difference between a scratching post and a carpet, you might want to get one of those card board ones, or one with a VERY different kind of carpeting compared to the one she is scratching, and then just keep making her try to scratch the post, after a while she is just doing what she knows she shouldnt, try spraying her with a bit of water, then wiping her paws on it, that should give her the hint she will be punished, once you see her starting to scratch the post by herself more often, she knows whats ok, reward her for it a bit, probably not by treats or something but by praise, Cats can tell between the emotions in your voice, and will be able to tell you are pleased with them if you are speaking calmly and praisingly :P (being stressed out and angry when you do this will probably not have any or have negative effect though) and after she starts scratching it on her own, just stomp your foot or show your ANGER somhow, (a yell, or loud startling noise works well) to let her know you arent pleased with her and know she knows better... hope that helped :D

The first time I bought a scratching post for my cats they had no idea what it was and no interest in learning so I put some catnip inside of it. They really liked it then...but they did try to *kill* it a couple of times.
