Apples and onions may protect athletes from cold Quercetin, the compound most commonly associated with onions and apples, grapes, tea and red wine, may boost the immune system and protect agains flu, according to results of a study with mice. In the first controlled experimental study to show a benefit of short-term quercetin feedings on susceptibility to respiratory infection following exercise stress, researchers from the University of South Carolina and Clemson University reported the consumption of foods like onion rich in this flavonoid could help reduce illnesses in people who have carrried out extensivve execies. The experts in their findingg published in the American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, said if the results can be reproduced in humans, the cheap and easily assessable flavonoid could be helpful in endurance athletes, soldiers and others undergoingg difficult training regimens, as well as poeple under psychological stress.
