I admit... Sometimes I am not as legal as I should be with programs I use. However, I REFUSE to install ANY operating system from anything other than an official ISO, an official CD, or a copy I know that I can trust. There are too many things to go wrong with pirating OSes like that, and Windows Update is CRUCIAL to keep your system safe. Even if I don't like Microsoft, which I don't.

I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X obviously, and use Boot Camp for Windows Vista Business. I got it free AND legally through the Computer Science department at my school, as I am a CIS major. I also use VMware Fusion to run Windows XP, my Boot Camp install, Windows Server 2008 (also free and legal, I love being a student), and several flavors of Linux and Solaris.

Yes, I do use a genuine windows OS (vista) for my laptop. It comes with it when I bought it. I think it is important to use the genuine because the performance of your computer depends on it. I don't know the difference with the one that's not genuine. How do we know if it is not? I am just curious. =)

If you use a version of Windows you downloaded from the Internet, there can be a lot of errors in the data, or worse, malware that some 'benefactor' providing you with this OS have integrated into the install files. Windows MIGHT tell you if it is pirated (probably by not 'activating'), though it has a bad track record and might not (or it might say you have a pirated version when you don't), but if it does, you will not be able to use Windows Update, or download certain MS software. If you used a real MS disc or a direct copy of one to pirate Windows, and it has no problem activating or validating, then you are safe running that, other than from a legal standpoint. Meaning you could still theoretically get sued, fined, or jail-time for it; but this is extremely rare.

I am using Vista because my husband just purchased my laptop 2months ago and to mention, it is genuine. I have xp with my desktop but it was also genuine. I don't care if its genuine or not as long as it runs my computer really good and I really don't care about it at all. But my hubby was the one who are good all about computers so I just leave it to him.

I will also chime in that I deplore Software companies' euphemisms for "This is legal and therefore you are a good person," such as 'Genuine.' Call it like it is, M$.

I use windows xp home edition and yes, it is genuine. What is torrent though? I always keep my computer up to date from the microsoft websites. I don't think the updates install if you don't have a genuine windows operating system. No problems thus far thankfully. I may be wrong but torrent sounds a little dodgy to me! Andrew
