Have you done it?

My fiance just signed up for Odesk and I was wondering if anyone else has done this. It's really confusing and I'm not sure that he even understands it. How does it work exactly? Do they pay? Is it worth doing?

it looks like a legit site to me, i joined 5 months ago and since then i never won any project, it so difficult to win a project there, i am not sure how the projects are awarded but until now i never won anything and i bid everyday, i am not sure if they want most people with experience or what but how are you going to get experince if they don't hire you? i find it to be very difficult for me, i have 5 months as i said but until now nothing came up but i hope he would win something

If you signed up 5 months ago, and haven't gotten any jobs from them, how do you know it's legit. Doesn't sound worth it to me.

The thing is that they want people who are more experienced in the projects they offer, you might know how the project works and maybe have experience but not recorded on their site and that doesn't mean anything because they want someone who has some recorded hours WITH them(done some projects with them), and for you to have hours recorded you need someone from their site to hire you, and is not easy to find that someone because they all need someone experienced

He decided not to do it. It seems like a waste of time. Thanks for responding.

With Odesk you have the option of working on a 'per assigment' pay rate or an hourly rate. If you win the job, then the work comes thick and fast and payment increases as you gain more confidence with the way they do their assignments. Payment is always on time every time on the 20th of each month. The testing process is quite harsh - but they do this on purpose to get rid of those who won't take this online job seriously. So if you give up and don't continue, then Odesk figure you weren't taking their jobs seriously and they'll give work to writers who take the tests and show the patience needed to act professionally with their clients.

unless there's another site with the same name, according to wiki it's a site where companies hire IT/web design freelancers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ODesk

I don't think it's the same site from what he's told me.

just out of curiosity, what is it that your fiance does??? Odesk is real companies hiring experienced IT, web designers, graphic artists, and other internet savvy workers. you have to be able to pass their tests and you should have a portfolio of what you can do. i haven't even signed up with them yet because i'm in the process of making a portfolio with samples of my graphic designs and i'm studying how to do coding for web sites and such. if your fiance is actually skilled at web design then here's a couple of other sites similar to Odesk: http://www.guru.com/ http://www.elance.com/

He is not into these fields. I guess it would be a waste of time for him then. Thanks for the info.

I registered with odesk about four months ago, it is a good site with jobs which are verified for payment. In odesk you have to apply and compete with other comptent people. You have to apply for any available job, you must write a good cover letter, and the cv. odesk verify most of their work and would even tell your they verified paying customers. You must pass their grading exams for you to start applying for a job, they also have some ongoing grade test for improvement of knowledge. They have fixed hour jobs and negotiable jobs, payment are also done through their debit card which is payoneer. Joining is free, I have never gotten any job probably I don't take much time there

That sounds great but you are the third person to say you have not gotten jobs from them yet. It doesn't sound so great to me. 4 months is a long time to try to get work.
