um not to gross you out even further but back when we had a dog, we used to call those kitty biscuits. Can you put the litter box in a small area, like a laundry room or something, and then put a dog gate up. The cat would be able to jump the gate but the dog wouldn't.

A vet can prescribe medicine that will make it stop. And I think there is something you can spray on the cat box that should make dogs uninterested, i think you get it at pet stores.

I don't find this as gross. Why? Because my dogs eat their own. At least one of them eats his own. But his mother, eats hers and everyone else's. Now that's what is actually gross. And you should just see them in action. Ugh. But then, I love them so much. I make sure they drink lots and lots of water. Actually, I try my very best to avoid it. When I leave them out, I kind of know by now that they want to go. Then I hang around them, with a waste bag and bits of card pieces. I make sure I clean up immediately after them. This is the only way I can avoid it. Sometimes I have to yell 'Trixy' or 'Teddy', and they get back. If I'm around, they pretend they don't like it, and walk far away from it. They are so funny.

There is pills that you can give to your dogs that will make their own poop taste horrible to themselves. I am currently giving it to my dogs in hopes that they will keep out of the litter box. (No such luck, the litter box is like a snack bar to them!) But they don't eat each other's poop. I got it at PetCo and it's called NaturVet, Coprophagia Deterrent. It was about $10 for a bottle of 60 tablets. It isn't healthy for them to eat their own poop, as it would return bad bacteria back into their systems.

We had this problem too. All dogs think cat poop is delicious. We no longer deal with a litter box but when we did still have such we just had to put it where the dogs couldn't get to it. We used an old cabinet high enough off the floor to keep the dogs out but the cats could jump up to it. Our cats are indoor outdoor and used the box mostly at night, preferring to go outdoors in the yard. The cats eventually just started taking advantage of going out if we let the dogs out at night. When we adopted a kitten a few years ago we once again had to have a litter box but as soon as he was old enough to be let out by himself he picked up on the outdoor business quickly. If your cats are indoor only you might try hiding the litter box. I saw an idea on a TV program once that used an old dresser or cabinet as a litter hideaway.

I couldn't believe your post, I just lost it last night at my female mini Dachshund for "snacking". I can't stand a dog that fishes in the litter box for their snacks. I rubbed her face in the stool (which, by the way was fresh. She must have stood there watching the cat produce the snack!!! )and really got rabid about it. I kind of have the feeling that she won't do it for awhile because she had such a surprised look on her face! The only draw back was I had to wash her face after I calmed down.
According the the dog books I have it is a natural instinct for them to eat stools, and that it won't hurt them but it would increase the possibility of worms. Also if the stool they eat has the parvo virus in it they could contract it. They suggest adding Adolph's meat tenderizer to their food. If the dog is under 15 pounds give them a quarter of a teaspoon. For Fifteen to thirty pounds give them a half a teaspoon and for 31-50 pounds three-quarters of a teaspoon and for over fifty pounds a teaspoon. You just mix it in their food and it should make the stools very objectionable to the dogs...and that would be any stools. Pay day I'm getting the Adolph's!!! Oh, by the way, the information came from "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats by Amy D. Shojai and the editors of Prevention for Pets.

I don't loose it often, but for some reason dogs eating cat poop pushes my button. The last time I lost it that badly I literally picked up a 150 pound Rottweiler and rubbed her head in the litter box!! She never went near it again. I'm not sure if it's because I rubbed her head in the box, or that I could actually pick her up!
I do have one other suggestion, and that is to get a litter maid cat box. They are great as you don't have to constantly clean the box it cleans within ten minutes after the cats use it. I have one and haven't been using it because I had my kid and her family staying with me and there was no room for it. I'm going to switch back because of the fact that when the litter is scooped it goes into a container with a lid on it so the dogs can't get into the litter. (It saves on one's anger factor too!)

It is pretty gross, but is your dog actually a small puppy still?
I guess your dog/puppy is very active and eats nearly everything.

Wow you have a dog that recycles. Why make it stop? Just think of all of the money you will save on dog food and the time you will save not having to clean out the litter box.
Watch the dog whisperer and apply the techniques you learn on the show.

I think that nearly all dogs do this, when my dog was alive she used to gobble it up as quickly as she could. It used to be a race when the cats had been in between me and my dog to get to the poop first. Not so I could eat it, so that I could scoop it out before she ate it! I used to keep the litter in a place where I could keep her away from it, that is about the only thing I could do to stop her, that and making sure it was cleaned out straightaway. The best thing is they like to come and lick peoples faces when they have eaten it, YUCK!

hi jamesgrub,
i have a Jack Russell too and when she was a puppy she went into the cat's litter box as well and ate her poop.
we actually asked the vet about it and he said that the cat's poop has a lot of nutrients in it and thats why she did it. when we saw she did it we just said no and eventually she stopped doing it. shes 10 years old now and hasnt touched it in like 9.5 years
