How to stop a child stealing

What do you do with a defiant child who just won't stop stealing things no matter what?
I have problem and yes I do discipline and it has no effect at all. If I tell her "no" to something, then she will take it. I am forced to follow her around the house into every room she goes in, because she can not be alone for one second without stealing or destroying something. I can't allow her to accept invitations to play at friends homes or for slumber parties.
This is not something neither I nor anyone in my family has taught her to do. We are just not those kind of people.
Its not like she doesn't have anything. I love this kid, but I'm on my last nerve.
I've dug through a couple parenting books and tried their methods and I have tried and still trying counseling, but no score.
f there is anyone who has been through this ordeal and fixed it, please tell me how.

It all depends on the age of the child. If you have a teen that is stealing from you, you can call the police and get them involved. I think that someone like you are describing needs the outside help. Just think if she continues this and goes into a store and decides to start stealing. I would want to nip this in the bud quickly before she is arrested and spends time in jail.

She does act like a teen sometimes with her attitude, but shes only 9.

If it were stealing from a store I'd suggest what my Mom and grandma did, make the child take it back in and apologize for doing it.
Seeing as how this is going on at home and in other ppl's home and eventually will happen in school if it's not stopped, I'd say strong punishments might work. Standing in corners, taking away privleges and losing treats are a start. She has to learn that it's not acceptable.

Hi cupkitties...I think that is easy as she is just 9 years old though. You just need to intimidate her with the things that she scare the most. I don't know what it is but you as her mom should know it. Probably brings her to police station and tell her what will happens to a girl who like to steal. =)
