Its not a question of good films or bad films, but its more a question of understanding and a certain psychological barrier. The Oscars sustain a million dollar industry and for that, they need to connect to the masses in a large way. The lifestyle of the USA and other first world countries are similar and so they can relate better to the movies. Indian lifestyle is completely alien to them. Secondly, it’s a league of nations and countries which they favour and the Oscan mostly stays within that circle. India is not in that league nor a favourite in any way. Thirdly, even the most ‘serious’ of India films have loads of songs and dance, again a concept completely alien to the western movie buff. They may have musicals and background scores, but the protagonists certainly don’t break into a song and dance sequence at every opportunity.
Lets acknowledge the fact that Indian movies and western movies are world apart and the fact that we watch so many English movies is because of the global nature of English language and also because we like to flaunt our supposed ‘knowledge’ of the west. To me, we should just forget the Oscars…our movies are make like us for us to enjoy and evaluate and appreciate. It should be enough if a billion people, alongwth the best of movie critics, appreciate a film for what it is. We don’t need any western endorsement.
