do you use your mobile phone in public?

I've read a blog from a friend of mine with regards to his cellphone that was being snatch a week ago. and I pity him for that happened to him. it happened a week ago. he was inside the PUV. since the jeepney was still waiting for some passengers, he got a little bored and decided to play the mp3 of his "world slimmest phone" as he wrote in his blog. then he also texted his friend that he'll going to meet. then when he's about to send the message, in a blink of an eye, he's phone was gone!.. at first he thought that a friend who maybe saw him inside the jeepney plays a trick on him.. but when he look outside, he saw a man running with his mobile phone and then put it into his pocket. he got so shock and didn't know what to do if he'll going to shout, or run after the man. (he actually wrote in there that he's a bit shy to make a scene at that time.).. then the girl beside her ask him.. "your phone was snatch! have you seen him?! he's already running! and he's too far!".. because he's still in shock and shaking to death, he just answered back.."yeah I saw him. then he just smile." but deep inside of him, he was really crying and shouting.LOL. he didn't reported it to the police for he knew that nothing will happen. he'll no longer recover the cellphone that's being snatch. but on the same day, he went to buy a new phone which is better than the one that is being snatch. there's actually lots of cases where in snatcher can easily get our cellphones especially if someone is using it in public.. that is why I rarely use my phone in public. in the jeepney station, outside our house.. anywhere.. we can never tell what will gonna happen, so we better be safe than sorry.. well, if there's an emergency call or text, I will probably answer it even if I am in public.. but I usually hold it tightly with both hands.LOL. so that no one would get that so easily. and I do answer it if I am inside the jeepney and I will hide it inside my bag while texting. or use my hair to hide it and hold it so tight with my both hands if I have an important call. how about you? do you use your mobile phones in public? has it happen to you? thanks in advance for sharing!

I use it in public but with great caution and I really observe people around to see if there are mysterious looking people. It really pays to be extra careful.

Ha.. Poor guy. That's a sad story of course and I think that guy should have chased him. Such things usually do not happen with me. I have had my things lifted from my bag in the class, but never in the public. It sometimes happens that when something strikes you suddenly, you are usually shocked. And as dumb struck and do not have a sudden response. But I think people shouldn't try to do something like that with me. I'm sure I'll chase them down without any problem. lol.. bourne

I do not go through life worrying about the worst thing that might happen to me and working to avoid it - paranoia leads to absurd over-reaction as per our governments that have massively over-reacted to the non-existent threat of terrorism by invading Iraq and Afghanistan, banning human rights on freedom of movement, assuming all muslim men are terrorists and creating concentration camps at Guantanamo Bay and Bellmarsh prison, UK to hold men on the flimsiest of evidence and suspending any human rights they have for years without access to any legal advice. No - I do not assume I am going to be robbed in public. I am happy to walk at night and to use my mobile phone where necessary. Challenge the negative elements of the media - a busy street is a safe street. If people are scared to go out those who do ebcome more at risk - reclaim the streets!

well, I guess not all busy streets are so safe.. there's lots of busy streets here in our country that sometimes people are taking advantage of it to make a crime. like snatching, and picking pockets. I hope that I also have courage like you, to walk in the middle of the night without worrying to much!

He should have reported it to the police! They would be able to flag the cell phone as stolen and the cell company could probably even locate it! Anyway, I use it in public, that's the point of a cell phone, to use it outside your house. I don't worry too much about mine getting stolen because cell phones aren't worth a ton really since people can get them for free with a calling plane, and besides, once you call and deactivate it, the cell phone is flagged and usually cannot be reactivated under another number.

well, maybe he doesn't know about that. and I think because of too much depression, and he doesn't want to get disappointed if his phone couldn't be recover.

Phone Snatching cases usually happen at night here. If you're on a bike at a secluded area and no one's around for miles and you spot a person approaching youasking for directions, never stop move on. There are lots of incidents that lead to theft when u stop to help. I have never experienced Phone thefts wid me as yet. but i'd do my best to follow the guy who snatched mine or i'd goto the nearest Police Station.

I don't use it in public and if I have to check if somebody texted me..I have to go somewhere near security guards.I am such a paranoid woman and I don't even put my wallet and cellphone in my back..I have a very large handkerchier and I am holding it together with my purse and my cellphone.I don't know how and what I am going to feel and do if I'll lose my cp.I'll go insane or if they'll ask for my cp I'll get my sim card.My cellphone is my life.

I use my cell phone in public all of the time. You just have to call & report it as stolen so that it is shut down. I've never had one snatched from me. I think that everyone around me probably has one too. That's ashame that someone would steal anothers cell phone. Where is this world going??

Actually, he probably wasn't too worried if he had insurance on the phone! I know out here, if your phone is stolen, they usually want a police report or some sort of affidavit stating the phone was stolen! Other than that, I use my phone in public all of the time, I guess here we're more so worried about identity theft. I've heard of individuals stealing business account information and ordering numerous phones and selling them to side cell phone stores! Crazy, but if that's going on, I'm not too concerned about my one phone! Taripre$

Here in kuwait we can use our mobile in any places, because we are safe to use. but in other country i dont like to use my mobile in the public specially when im going back home in my country( Philippines) because i heard lot of people that they lose thier cellphones in the public places. i just keep inside my pocket or in my bag & use my headset so nobody can see & hide in my long hair the wire. walking like normal seem like nothing at all in my body.

oh really? well, I guess Kuwait is such an anti-crime country. oh yeah. it was so sad that here in our country, lots of people are doing crimes, even if we're doing nothing with them.

Very sorry to hear the incident which happend with your friends. It was really shocking. I completely agree with you that while at public places, we should be aware of surroundings. As far as I am concerned, it depends upon the situation, if an urgent call has to be made, I use my cell phone, of course with due precautions. I try to be alert while using my cell at public places. Sometimes, a call comes, while you are at public place, which cannot be avoided, so I take that call. I keep my cell safely in my inner pocket to avoid any mishap.

I don't put my phone in my pocket. some might get it, or I am afraid that it might slip out. I just put it inside my bag to be more safe.

oh my goodness that is such a horrible thing to happen. i can't imagine it happening to me. i'd most probably be as shocked as your friend was. thankfully it doesn't happen to often in my country. there are not many cases of people snatching the mobile phone of others. i use my mobile phone a lot in the public. i play games on it when i'm bored, check my emails and of course text my friends. i really cannot imagine having to be so fearful with the simple act of using my mobile phone. if that is the case, i think i will just not carry one. cheers

Fortunately for me it hasn't happened and I hope it won't happen to me at all. Like you I don't usually text while in public unless I have an important call. I don't think they would be interested with my phone though because it is so out of date. But if I have very nice phone like the most latest one, I would probably respond to a text message while holding it inside my bag. .

I do use my cell phone in the public sometimes. But i have not experienced a snatching so far. I haven't heard of snatching around my place. But there are cellphone thefts though. Still, i take precaution when using my mobile phone in the public places. I'm sorry for your friend though. He must have had a great shock.

sad to hear that but the purpose of buying a cell phone is to be able to use it anytime and anywhere where u need to and this would mean most of the time in public places. this cannot be avoided and if u do not want to use it then might as well not purchase a cellphone. just execise precaution and care when using it. maybe the police should do something about the security in the area rather than users not using their cellphones. this would not resolve the problem
