Has anyone tried both of these systems. At the moment I am using Linux, but keep hearing a lot about BSD and wonder if it would be better to swap or stick with Linux.

FreeBSD and Linux both are great open source products. I use them both for different purposes. I use Linux for my desktop as it has a better support for hardware and it has lots of eye candy which i want from my desktop. I use FreeBSD as a server operating system, I know even FreeBSD can function as a desktop, but i like it as a server as it is very stable and very secure. From the surface you wont feel the difference between these two , but once you dive in you will notice that they are two different identities.

I think that FreeBSD is a bit too in depth and Raw for me at the moment, so will probably stick with Linux for now as it seems really stable and has good support in the forums if I ever need to turn to someone for Help. But perhaps when I upgrade my system, I might dabble with BSD on the spare set up.

DO give it a try if you have a spare time and spare hardware available with you :-) The learning curve is bit steep when compared to most of the Linux distributions out there but you would enjoy it end of the day.

Well it depends whether you are a general user or a guy who likes to tweak security settings oftenIf you are a general user use Ubbuntu,Fedora etc. otherwise if you want to provide security to your computer go for OpenBSD.

Thanks henry for your response, at the moment I am using Mandriva 2009, and it really is great, so I probarly won't change for now, it was just that I was intrigued about it more than anything on how it compares to Linux. I am hoping to upgrade in the New Year, so I might fiddle with BSD on this system just to have a look at it.

Thanks for responding, I will perhaps go and have a look, although I do like the set up that I have already.

Just like Linux,FreeBSD is an advanced BSD Unix OS for the intel x86 and the DEC alpha Architecture. FreeBSD has often been the first choice for the internet servers. Both uses advanced hardware, and are free. FreeBSD is more stable, and faster than Linux.

Thanks for your response, have you used BSD, as I beleive there are different distros like linux, and not sure the difference (if any ) between them.

I've been using Linux for at least 6 years off and on and love it. I gave FreeBSD a try not that long ago and it was slightly difficult for me to get set up and use. Someday when I build another computer I plan on putting FreeBSD on it and learning more about it. To me, Linux is "better" for desktop use, and any BSD distro (freebsd, openbsd, netbsd) is better for server/internet use. It just depends on what you're used to and like.

Thanks for the response, I was thinking along similar lines as this for the moment, as for now I am quite content with Linux, but I just thought maybe ?
