All the people who posted that the "B" was backward in this incident were correct. Do you think she is mentally ill or is that that just an excuses? IMO she should not get off free but should be punished for this outrage. A McCain campaign volunteer made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" scratched on her face in what she had said was a politically inspired attack, police said Friday. Ashley Todd, 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, admitted Friday that the story was false, said Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division. Todd was charged with making a false report to police, and Bryant said police doubted her story from the start. Todd could provide no explanation for why she invented the story, police said. The woman told investigators she believes she cut the "B" onto her own cheek, but did not provide an explanation of how or why and said she doesn't remember doing so, police said. Police said the woman reported suffering from "mental problems" in the past, and that they do not believe anyone put her up to the act. Tranquilli said Todd will remain jailed over the weekend pending a psychiatric evaluation, which won't happen until Monday at the earliest.

Let them do what they will with her. I can't say I have any sympathy for her. Her racism is very similar to that of Susan Smith who killed her own children and then said a black man abducted them. I don't think there was any real poltical connection here other than the fact that she was making a grab for attention and used a much publicized political race to that end. Truth is, psychopaths do tend to use current events to get attention. So, in addition to being an unhinged, racist nut, she has also added to the divisiveness of the current political scene...UGH!

Something is wrong with this girl. I truly hope her phschiatric evaluations can help get her treatment. I also feel sorry for the McCain campaign. This cannot be good news for them at this point.

I fear it is less "mental illness", and more like pure political zealotry. Many people working on a campaign will go to outrageous lengths to get noticed by those they support and/or affect the election in their candidates' favor. You certainly don't need to be "mentally ill" to be a 20-yr-old looking for attention. Of course, I could question the sanity of anyone campaigning for McCain/Palin.

Ithink whatever she gets she deserves...this is just another stunt to make black people especially black men look bad...I think it was thought out...and she knew what she was doing...she knew how people would react and she knew how people would try to associated obama with this black men doing. She knew that people would thinkk all black people are bad which they are not.Im glad they caught her, because this situation which she is lying about is actually happening to obama supporters.

i think this is so stupid. some people will go to such extremes over a election. i think that woman needs to go to jail. people are trying to make it seem like people are being so violent over a race issue. i think its stupid and pathetic i think people just need to lay off of obama and just chill out until the election is over.

This woman needs help. I thought when I heard this story it sounded fishy. She's a young girl who actually would cut herself is ill. I don't know where she got this crazy idea. This is just off the wall crazy. I don't believe she doesn't remember cutting herself, but she is mentally ill to plan such a thing.

This sounds like fanaticism and fantasy in one. Clearly, the lady in question must be regarded as a risk to herself, and should be sectioned. Hopefully, with help, she'll be okay some day.

I believe she is mentally ill and on the news I heard that she has a history of mental illness. I believe the reason she did this is to get attention. There are people who injure themselves and/or make themselves sick to get attention. In this case she managed to get national attention. If she were ONLY trying to make Obama supporters look bad, I don't think she would have confessed so quickly.

The clue was the backward B. It can only look like that if she did it looking in a mirror. That told me it was fake. I am surprised the police did not bring this up. Very strange.

I beleive she had to have some type of mental problem, because I don't understand why she would go as far as beating herself up and carving a B on her face just to make Obama and his supporters look bad. It doesn't make sense, and she did a poor job of it too... You could tell obviously from the start that she used a mirror to carve a B on her face...

I'm going to wait until after the mental evaluation before forming a final opinion on this woman and what should happen to her. If she has a mental illness serious enough to cause black outs, perhaps she shouldn't be punished as severely, however, just claiming to have mental problems does not necessarily mean that you lose control to the point that you are unaware of what happened and confused to the point that you make specific allegations towards another person. The fact that she did have a complete story of her *attack*, which included a motive, leads me to believe that she set this up but, again, I will wait. I'm just glad that no innocent people were hurt during the couple of days that this lie was promoted as truth.

this story made the healines, OF COURSE bc people are stupid enough to believe them...a lot of people will do anything for attention, and i find it pretty sad when it comes out in this way to the public. Although, there will be fanatics everywhere in the world, and I believe that such things are heard of.
