best way to overcome is to spend lots of time with friends and family, I rmember when my mom passed away 3 years ago my uncles and aunts kept calling, coming by, and took me and my dad out for dinners and lunch and golfing and stuff. Over time the hurt lessened and it was easier to get on with life.

take them shopping, buy them some new things, maybe talk them into getting a pet like a puppy? I know I was very happy when the wife and I got a new puppy :-)

I'm very sorry for your friend, really.... my son is 7 and I think that if he had to die.... I don't dare thinking a terrible possibility like this.... seeing our children die is the most terrible thing we can see....
I think that only your friend can find an answer to his/her pain.... you should stay near him/her the most possible and help him/her with words of hope.
