I had been actively looking for a secret shopper (aka mystery shopper) type of job. Checked with many sites, tried doing my homework.
So, I get a letter via snail mail, with an offer of a secrety shopper job on a trial basis. They enclosed a check, and instructions of what to do with the money, Keep some as a salary, spend $100 at a department store from a list they gave, send a wire transfer.
A few bells went off, and my husband and I did discuss it for several days before I decided to follow through. So, I started out setting up a separate checking account..just for this check and any future "earnings". A few days later, I went to the bank to check, and they said that the check had cleared. For some reason I also deposited $150 of my own cash. The check they sent was almost $4000.
So, I wrote a check for $200. For some spending money and to do the $100 shopping trip. For some reason I was very wary of the wire transfer of the large amount...Over $3200. So, I decided, wait til the ATM card comes, and use that to pay. I get the ATM card, try to activate it..and BANG..the stuff starts to fall apart. The account was put on hold as possible fraud, they were investigating etc, etc.
It turns out the check was fraudulent. I was only responsible for $50..as I had deposited 150 dollars of my own, but withdrew 200 dollars.
I lucked out. The guy at the bank said the best thing I could have done was to open a separate account...and to NOT with draw the larger amount just yet.
So, I guess the jobs are out there, we just have to be aware.

wow. thanks for posting this. if i get something like that im starting a new checking account for sure!
isnt there anyway for the bank to determine if the check is fraudulent or not BEFORE its deposited? cant they like call the issuing bank and have them confirm the account or confirm the funds are IN the account?
you'd think with how often this type of check scam thing is happening they would have devised something.

Cinder:
I am not sure. When I was at the bank dealing with the fallout of this, the teller, Eddie, (my new best friend) told me of a lady who brought a check in for a job in Canada. He noticed it was drawn on a US bank, which raised a red flag for him. He called it in and sure enough, it was an altered check.
Eddie did tell me that we, as the customer, could visit or call the issuing bank and check for ourselves. I would guess if there is not a local branch, your bank will do it for you. But I got the impression that unless something pops up at the local branch, or of there is an obvious problem, it is hard to tell. I was told that the local branches are not connected well with the fraud part of the banking system. They do not have a lot of access.

Wow. It is a good thing that you opened a separate account. It is a shame that people try to deceive others with that scam. Usually anything that wants you to send money via wire transfer after cashing a check is fraudulent.

Right. And I have always thought I was smarter than that. I just wanted to post this as a reminder to us all that any of us can fall for a scam, and to just be really careful.
This is not going to stop me from trying to find some sort of work like this, but I will definatly be more aware in the future.
