Can you offer me some advice on what to do?

A very nice black cat came to my house today. She is very young and seems to be hungry and was crying. I have brought her inside and fed her and she is sleeping on my bed. Talk about moving in fast. She is wary of my dog and he is wary of her but very curious. She seems fairly well looked after so I don't know if I should keep her or not. I asked around but no one seems to know her and I have never seen her around before. I have left the outside door open so she can leave if she wishes. If she stays what do I do? My question is should I keep her? What do you think? What would you do if a cat moved in?

If yu like the cat and it did not have any tags or i.d I would say keep the cat. It seems to like your home especially your bed. I think given time the two animals will begin to feel comfortable with each other. Much success.

I wanted to keep her but she followed me out of the house and ran away and now I am concerned about her. My partner reckons that she was just a wanderer who had a home and she did not like my dog. He has promised to get me a new puppy for Christmas to replace my little dog that I lost last Christmas. I would have given her a home with lots of love.

I would put up a couple of adverts describing the cat, and if you like him and no one claims him, then keep him. He must know you are a nice person. He must like you. I would keep him if he came into my house and no one claimed him. If you do not want to keep him, maybe because of your dog, take him to an animal rescue centre nearby.

I really would have loved to keep her but she followed me out of the house at some point and then ran off and has not been seen since. I am a little sad as she was such a nice cat but she did find the dog hard to live with. He was just curious about her.

hi sharra1 well I would check the paper for lost cats, then if there are none for black cats, well I would keep the little sweetie as she needs a home.I have had two cats come to my patio but I cannot make friends as I live in an apartment complex that allows no pets of any kind. I miss not having any pets. we always had a dog and a cat when we had our own house.

A cute cat come into your life,it is not bad,i think if you like it,you can keep her.First try to find her owner, maybe her owner is worry about her now,you lost your dog you will also like this.Second cat and dog get together well?it is a problem,if you keep her, your cute cat is fighting with your dog everyday, you will be mad,all of things will mess, you don't like indeed! If i was you,i will left her ourside after i fed her, maybe she likes freedom,i will look for several days,if she don't leave and always around my home,i will keep her.

I really would have loved to keep her but I was also sure that she had a home somewhere because she seemed to well looked after. My partner reckons she was just exploring. Anyway she followed me out of the house at some point and then ran off and has not been seen since. I think she found my dog hard to live with and when I went outside to feed the chickens she followed me and then ran. I hope she finds her owners. I hate to think she is lost somewhere.

If you like cats, keep her. I have six of them so It's safe to say I love cats. You must get her fixed and get her shots. There are some inexpensive places to get these thing done. I know some animil shelters/welfare have inexpensive or free shots. I go to a place calls NAWS. I'm not sure if they are national or just here locally but I got shots and neutering for $50.00 each cat.

What I do when animals show up! I of course call the owner if there is an ID. Most of the time there isn't, which is very unfortunate for all involved. I call the Humane Society, Animal Control, and animal clinics and put up signs to see if anyone is looking for it. I try to keep them safe until I find the owner, (most of the time I do). I became a rescuer not meaning to but I love animals! I have 7 cats now, I am down from 33! God Bless!

Well she did not have any id, no collar or anything like that. I am still quite sad about her leaving but my partner is probably right that she had a home somewhere near. Still I have never seen her before. Anyway she followed me outside and then ran off. I miss her.

That is a lovely thought but I am not sure she is happy with our dog. I think that for a cat and dog to get on together then one of them needs to be a baby and grow up with the dog or cat. This cat seems very scared of our dog and he is a bid dog but he is very gentle. He is just curious.

Well I have ended up with 2 cats that appeared at my husband's job and we have 4 now. So if she fits in well to your home, I would say let her stay. She could make good company for the dog too.

I wanted her to stay. I went out and bought some food for her but she was not happy about the dog. I have never had such an affectionate cat in my life and I would have kept her if she had wanted to stay. I wish she had. I would have loved for her to stay and I still think about her and wonder if she is ok.

IT all depends on what you want to do. I mean if she doesnt have an owner, she doesnt make a mess of the house, and their isnt to much ruckus between the dog and the cat, then I dont see why not. I know people who take it strays and it can work out very well. On the other hand it doesnt always, you gotta worry about potty training etc lol, some cats do spray. So its all up to you. If shes a good cat and isnt to much of an inconvenience then I say go for it.

I am not so sure she was a stray now as she was not that hungry when I fed her, although she was very thirsty, and when I went outside she followed me and then ran away. This was strange because the door was open the whole time she was here and she did not go near it until I went outside. I have not seen her since and I hope she is ok.

First try to find the owner while you are keeping it. Then if nobody claims the cat then take care of the cat, keep it, if you like don't hesitate. I have never experienced that before with a cat, but I have one with a rabbit. My two uncles found a rabbit one of the street in our village. They got the rabbit and brought it home. When I woke in the morning I saw a rabbit. They told me that they found it. After 2 days I went outside and saw a paper that "LOOKING FOR A LOST RABBIT. Please call ......". When I got home I painted my rabbit blue, using the blue ink for pentel pen. Finder's Keeper's!

I don't care much for cats living in the house, so I'd definately move it out. Although there is a cat that strayed here and is living under our porch and our dog wandered up all living outside but are free to go as they please, that'd be the main thing if you're worried of keeping someone elses pet for them to have the freedom to leave. The next thing are you really wanting to keep this cat? To me it looks like you have tied all loose ends trying to find an owner.Looks like you are already growing attached so if you don't want this cat you better find it a home soon before it's to late and you fall in love.

Oh I love all my pets being in the house. I see nothing wrong with it. I never like leaving my animals outside. In fact our dog gets the bed when we are not using it. Bad habit maybe but hard to break now.

Hi friend, in my opinion, i dont think you should keep her because it seems weird that a black cat came into your house and futhermore it ise a nice looking black cat. It should belong to someone it my opinion, maybe you can look after it for the time being it you wish but it will be hard for you to return it to its orginal owner because you will develope feelings for it. happy lotting and see you around.

aw that is so cute. she sounds like a really sweet cat. if shes being that cool and not freaking out trying to get out i think you should keep her, especially if you cant find out who she belongs too. i think its sad when i see a stray cat. one time a cat came up to my backyard and was hungry and i ended up keeping her and now ive had her for about 5 years i really love her.

My brother had a cat for years who wandered into his house one day. I was hoping she would stay as the door was open and she had not run but when I went out to feed the chickens I saw her come out the door and make a dash for the fence. I have looked but have not seen her since. I am a bit sad because she was such a nice cat and I like her alot. I am sure that she would have got on with the dog in time. Oh well.

If you don't want to keep her and there is no one who is able to home it, I would phone an animal shelter. Ifyou have enough space for her and the dog manages to accept her I would keep her if you have time for her. © ronaldinu 2008

If she is willing to stay with me I am able to keep her. I know that animal shelters are wonderful for animals that need them but I would look after her rather than give her to a shelter.

It seems like you are doing all that you can. Most of the cats that have lived here have simply moved in or have been taken in as strays so if not an unusual situation. If you are happy with the situation, just continue to feed her and make sure that she can get out if she wants to so that she can return to where ever she was before if she wants to do so. It sounds like your dog is not bothered about it - at least it's not attacked the cat on sight. So they will very likely become friends after a while.

I am sure they would have become friends in time but she did not stick around long enough to find out. Maybe my partner was right and she was not a stray, just a cat who was exploring. I went outside to feed the chickens she followed me and then ran. I have not seen her since. I had forgotten how nice cats can be as I have not had one for years. I still have the scars from the scratches though.

Knowing me and my fondness of cats (I have 7) and the never ending strays that come by, I'd probably keep her. This isn't the time of year for black cats to be left outside unattended anyway. Unfortunately, there are some people that use them for rituals. I would suggest taking her to the vet though to be checked over and make sure she is healthy if you plan to keep her. You wouldn't want her to infect your dogs with any worms or other issues. Good luck!

Take her to your vet, first thing, she may be PG if not you need to spay her ASAP. With all the people loosing their homes, they are leaving theier well cared for pets behind. She may be one of those. Enjoy

If she had stayed with us I would have taken her to the vet and had all her shots done etc. I wish she had stayed. I liked her very much and I miss her already. She followed me out of the house and then ran off. I have no idea where she went.

Funny enough, this actually happened to me--twice. I started out with a dog. After that, we got a cat. Okay, normal pet scenario, right? Well, after THAT, we find a stray cat in our garage who won't leave. She's hungry, so we feed her, and eventually she becomes part of the family (we love her). After THAT, ANOTHER cat wandered around our house (about two years later), and also wouldn't leave. He was stray because of the San Diego wildfires last year. So, we ended up keeping him too. Now I have a dog and three cats, and they all get along fine :)
