Should Schools Have Uniforms?

I attended an exclusive private high school in San Diego, California, and although the idea was suggested (and fought for), school uniforms never really caught on. I, personally, was very thankful, as I was a nerd and didn't want to have to wear the same clothing as everybody else everyday, but some people--students included--were actually pretty bummed that the uniform rule wasn't passed. We still had a strict dress code, but we didn't all have to wear the same clothes.
What are your opinions about mandatory school uniforms in schools? Does it reduce fighting and cliques, or just annoy and batter students with more unnecessary rules?

yes i personally believe that schools should have uniform..and if we check out clearly the answer is also pretty clear as in uniforms to an extent unite the children better as in students identify themselves as belonging to the same institution rather than groupings coming up if uniforms were not compulsory..children tend to unite, develop a sort of equality feelings and feel that we are here to study rather than just show off.

well the thing about uniforms is .. they gives a unity among sudent..
same dress same class same way of thinking.
it does help the mind set of people.. but all the same loose fitting clothes and like do take the beauty factor from the students...

Hey,buddy,In my opinion, schools should have uniforms though the uniforms may
make you look drab and dreay ,it defines you as part of the school ,it identified
you as a student. We are students and we should admite it .So, boy ,pick up your
uniform and try to love it !

Hi. Even tho, I am now the mother of 3 adult children, I remember when this same subject came up in their high schools. I was passed almost unamiously for the school uniforms. Parents were so happy. The ones that couldn't afford the lastest for their children, (they no longer stood out), it was easily on working parents to get kids ready, and the kids had to finally admit that it may things easier at school for them, and they could used that clothing allowances for fabulous afterschool and weekend clothes, shoes, and accessories.

i think every school should have uniforms.
they can easily recognize a students on where school is he/she attending by their uniforms even without the i.d's

Elementaries and High Schools should have uniforms to make it easier to recognize their students especially in public like field trips and those stuff. But in college, i think freedom of expression should be applied and let students wear civilian clothes as long as they are wearing decent ones and do not expose too much skin.

School uniforms would be good if it was required everywhere. But since they are not, its not a good idea. School uniforms are basically a way of implying that the uniformed school is superior...even though i honestly think it looks ridiculous.

Uniforms take away individuality and any thought that may have to go into what a child decides to wear to school everyday. This takes away their right to expression. Maybe a few parents should make their children dress more respectably so it wouldn't ruin it for the others. If you think that them all wearing the same will stop the look at my clothes that are better than yours line, you are sadly mistaken.... Then it will just be oh she has a Wal Mart or Target uniform, look at mine that came from the GAP.It's our job as parents to teach our children to deal with life and making them wear a uniform is not the answer. We need to teach them how to dress respectably and respond to problems that arise.

I think that they "hope" uniforms will stop the bullying. I don't buy it. I think the bullying is more deep-rooted than what another wears. We are raised to be individuals and young people define who they are by their hair and clothes as well as the personality. It is a form of expression. I understand setting limits but uniforms are going too far, I think. As for the poor kid, well, uniforms are expensive so forcing the family to buy uniforms so their child can "fit in" is only adding yet another burden to the family. A better answer would be to teach kids acceptance of the differences in others from kindergarten on up and have no tolerance for the bullying. I am completely against uniforms.

Hello, Writerdave! Here in the Philippines, most schools have their uniforms. And we are used to having them worn everyday. I am unto it. I like to see children going to school in their uniforms, they seemed to be very clean and neat. In uniforms, usually with school logos, we can easily identify which school the child is going to. In addition to this, wearing the same clothing for everyone refrain the children from comparing their clothes, this somehow reduces discrimination among them.
However, if you're used to not wearing uniforms in school, that just equally okay. Each country have their own rules and tradition, anyways.
Regards, Writerdave and happy posting!

I think schools should implement the type of uniform code my son's school has.
boys are to wear jeans or shorts in either blue, khaki, or denim
no hole tears, rips, in good condition.
Tee shirts or polo shirts with collar andcan be any color. No patterns or designs or ensignias,
If there is to be any insignia they can take the shirts to an embroiderer and have the school mascot put on the shirts or jackets.
Girls are the same no shorts or skirts above finger tip level. ( that rule is put your arm straight down your side. Where ever the longest finger falls, is where your short or skirts can not be above)
I think it hold children and parents both accountable. children are in school to learn not be distracted by the latest fashion. I do not feel that this squelches creativity one bit. In fact I think it encourages it. I am all for this type of uniform policy as it is cost effective and sstill give the kids a little wiggle room.

i think uniforms are a good idea.if u dont have the uniforms some people feel different as they cant afford all the new clothes and get picked on that way.wearing the uniforms doesnt stop fighting if anything you no who goes 2 what school and it can start the friction that way.in the town where i live the old middle schools always used 2 start on each other 1 woz know as the blue bottlwes and the other was the bumble bees.it does really stop the cliques as people will always go with what they know.yes the rules are a bit daft like the 1 my daughters at u have 2 have black or white socks(and yes they do check and u can be excluded if u rnt wearing the right colour)

School Uniforms are not essential for schools i think. They don't help you get higher grades and really have no positives. I would be very sad if i ever had to wear the same clothes as everyone else everyday.

yes i think in the school system it should be passed because we have so many students thats getting jump on because they have expensive shoes and clothes kids are jealous because they have these things but if we had uniform the other student would not know what sort of clothes and shoes they wear when they are not in school.kids can be cruel and vicious when they think the way you dress they think you think that you are better by the clothes they wear.

My Daughters all wear School uniform. I think 'personally' it is very smart and shows a good example of the School.
My girls hate it. They would prefare to wear casual clothes to School, but I am glad they wear the uniform because, some off the girls attending there are not well off, and would probably get name called. At least it makes all of them look the same. Neat and tidy. I think dress rules are very important in life overall.

Wereing the same clothes have both advantages and disadvantages. For us,wearing the same clothes that we can not publicity our personality, and maybe we will feel tired of the cloth. But if we wear the uniforms,it will reflect our state of mind. The school will look more vibrant. As for the reducing fighting and cliques,it does not affect them,if someone want to fight with somebody,he must be too craze to control himself, whether he wear the uniform,he will fight, too. The only thing we can do is to strengthen management and education.

whatever happened to freedom of expression? School uniforms deny that.
