"...forever linked to race-baiting,"?
That's exactly what John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News, said in his blog BEFORE the news broke that Ashley Todd had made up the whole story of being attacked by an assumed Obama supporter who carved a "B" on her face after seeing her McCain/Palin sticker on her car.
Here's more of what Moody wrote:
"This incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.
If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."
So, was he right, is McCain's quest for the Presidency now over?

Certainly not because of what one mentally unstable young woman did to herself. McCain cannot control the actions of his supporters anymore than Obama can control the actions of his. They can each only control their own behaviors and actions. They can each only control their own message and the message of their campaigns. They can each only control their own selections of running mate and be judged based upon all these things combined.
But to say that McCain should be judged based upon the actions of Ashley Todd is ridiculous.

McCain's race for teh Presidency may or may not be over, but one thing is clear, the campaign is getting murkier and murkier. Who ever becomes President, it will not make any major difference to the average American. The President will be faced with such enormous tasks of restoring world financial order that that he will find his hands full. he will have little time for domestic policy.

I don't think this particular incident will have much to do with McCain losing his quest for the Presidency. People understand that this woman was at the very least, an attention seeker, and likely a very sick woman. She really doesn't have much to do with McCain or his campaign. I think McCain's behavior over the past few months, including his choice for a running mate, his erratic decisions, his visible temper, and his hate/fear campaign will end his quest, without the help of Miss Todd. I really hope we will see that on Nov. 4. I guess it is not truly over until then, but I think things are falling into place as they should be.

They're looking worse each day. The McCain camp has run a campaign based on fear and hate. His supporters can deny it all they like but we've all seen the clips...Palin firing people up to be fearful of Obama, to hate him...the man who told John McCain in a shaky voice that he was afraid...McCain forced to defend Obama's character at his own rally where he was booed by his own supporters after his campaign of fear brought the wrong kind of media attention. I posted before about my neighbor's daughter, a college freshman here in Florida, going to Palin's rally with a couple of friends and how they left early because they were afraid...scared by the frenzy of aggression and hatred that they saw around them and, as young women, they feared for their own safety in a crowd like that.
So, I wasn't surprised that this Todd woman would stoop to such ugliness, mentally ill or not and yes, I believe that this presidential campaign will forever link John McCain to the promotion of racial division and hatred.

I live by that motto expect the worst hope for the best. So I am not counting McCain out until the election is over and the final poll says he is out, or not out. I don't like disappointment so that's the best way. Do you have any idea why this Moody guy believes that it was "race-baiting"? I think it would only be that if the McCain camp put this woman up to this, and I'm giving them the benefit that they did not.

Not living in America, the coverage we see here tends to focus far less on the personalities and more on the policies. And because our commentators have no noticeable bias to either candidate, we tend to get, I think, fairly objective analyses of the way the race is going.
Based on those analyses, the rest of the world pretty much expects a landslide for Obama. The report I saw last night suggested that Palin is now breaking ranks with McCain in a bid to save her own post-election political career, so the copmmentators are pretty sure Mcain's bid will fail. McCain, when I watched tha debate last week, came across as almost begging to be elected, in much the same way as our recently deposed Prime Minister was doing in the last week or so before his landslide loss. That loss, incidentally, included losing his own seat in Parliament, and from memory he is only the second incumbent leader to have done so in over 100 years. (Our system does not elect the leader separately from other representatives - the leader is chosen by his elected colleagues from among their number.)
I am not sure that the hoax will play any great part, that is more likely to play with those who had already made up their minds: I think the result will be a matter of the feeling that it is time for a change and Bush's unpopularity.

Much of what is alleged or goes on neither of the candidates is responsible for or even necessarily knows about. I am sick of all you political bashers from both parties. Many claiming to be "Christians" you sure show how ugly and hateful you really can be. Rather the same sort of nasty type crowd that wanted to crucify Christ our Lord. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. In a few days we will have a new leader. I would cast your vote for the man you choose, say your prayers and then when the dust is settled NO MATTER who wins, As our bible tells us at least for those who profess to be "Christians" PRAY for our new Commander in Chief no matter which of the two wins and ask God to help him lead this nation in a very sticky scary time in our American history. They are inheriting a lot of huge problems. Do ANY of you think you can do a better job?? Also vote wisely for the Congress because a lot of what the president does is also up to congress in the end. Stop bashing and trashing and start praying and giving some compassion and love to these two men who are trying to lead our nation. Get behind the winner with prayer and support and encouragment rather than such hatred I see on here.

I can't honestly see how McCain or his supporters can be held reponsible for what she did. I don't think this was at all political. She's no different from those criminals who pattern their crimes on an episode of Law & Order. They would have committed the crime anyway but by aping a popular TV show, they get national headlines. Same with this girl, she would have done something aberrant anyway but by introducing a political angle she's guaranteed herself 15 minutes of fame. Sociopaths like her don't give a damn about politics. It would not surprise me if she wasn't even registered to vote.

I wouldn't say its over cause you just never know how accurate the polls are for sure. If the polls are correct however there is no way McCain wins the white house. If all states that are leaning or safe Obama stay that way its just mathematically impossible for McCain to win it. I think polls are generally pretty accurate but we'll just have to wait for november 4 and see.

Hey annie, I'm not sure that this story is even going
to be remembered by the time the election roles around.
There is so much garbage being thrown that I'm afraid
that this hoax is going to just be another story that
get's thrown by the wayside and will not do anything to
McCain at all. The story was already proven to be nothing
but a lie made up by this sick individual who no one even
knows why she did it in the first place. She is so
insignificant that it is just about already forgotten!
With all the other news about Palin and her garbage and
everything else I just don't have any idea what stories
are going to count and what stories are going to be
forgotten! I just wish this election was over already!
I personally have had it!

I think the McCain campaign has been irrevocably linked to divisive tactics more so than to race-baiting, and this story won't affect it any more than any other of the stories that have surfaced. Like so many other stories, it's a one day wonder and let's move on. The reports that the story was pushed by the Republican party's state communications director before anything was verified are being shuffled aside as irrelevant and not representative of the campaign's stance. Once again, it was the poor judgment of a single worker in the Republican campaign, not indicative of the tenor of the campaign as a whole.

McCain's quest will end on Nov. 4th and not a minute before that. Folks are doing a lot of guessing right now and sure there are polls that say this ones ahead or behind. But when a person walks into the voting booth on Nov 4th- only they know who they will vote for- no matter what they say leading up to that point.
Both candiates are in for the race of the century- and when the polls close on Nov 4th- the only thing that is certain- is that our country for the 1st time in history will place a minority in the white house either are President or vice President- and I think that's amazing. What a great country we live.

YES ,The door of White House to McCain has already closed because of the Bush goverment, the The Wallstreet Crisis, and the Obama's youth. It's a little pity that he has quest for it for many times ,this time is the most near to the finally victory.
between the cup and the lip a morsel may slip.
