Do you like a happy ending?

So, I was watching a film last night in which there was the perfect happy ending... old lover came back to rescue the woman from her careless husband and to reclaim his son. and of course it all came out happily - the woman survived, despite being shot. the boy accepted his father when he found out the truths, and he was angry at his "father", the woman admitted her son was not her husbands, and her love for the man meant that he decided not to seek revenge but instead come and save the day etc. etc. ( you get the picture )
Anyway, through the whole movie I was hoping it would work out fine. Natural reaction, right? But I think if it hadn't worked out fine- I would've been distraught! Why? Because I am such a romantic at heart, I love happy endings.
So what about you? Do you like the original twist? Do you find it more interesting when the main character dies? Or, do you, like me, despair when things don't work out well and feel satisfied when they do?

I love the happy endings in movies. When a movie has a bad ending I always get worked up about and want to change the movie. I rather have the movie be predictable and have a happy ending than have a sad ending or it not work out the way I would have liked.
When I watch a movie that has a bad ending I never want to watch the movie again. On the other hand if the movie has a happy ending, I will watch the movie over again even though I know the ending!

Call me an old romantic at heart, but I'd much prefer the happy ending. There's nothing like rooting for the hero/heroine in the story, only to have them killed off in the end...and yes, that often disturbs me lol. When the main character gets killed at the end, you almost feel cheated of a good ending. I think that's why for the most part that I like the older movies, you were assured a good ending (where good still conquers evil, and happiness in the end instead of despair.) Unless I'm watching a horror movie or something, I'd like to walk away at the end of the movie feeling good about the ending.

I agree with that Joyful - it is disturbing if the main, beloved character gets killed! :3

Yeah, same here. It's like why would you ever want to see a sad ending, isn't the whole purpose of you watching this movie is to be entertained? Who would ever be entertained by sadness, right?
So, I do like happy endings, I don't know of anyone who doesn't like happy endings. It's actually the basic thing in all movies, what differs is how they deliver them plus of course the unexpected twists. Perhaps the happy ending but not so happy ending movie for me would be the movie with Julia Roberts which was entitled "My Best Friend's Wedding", it was a happy movie, though she accepted the fact that he could never be her other than her best friend, I was still kinda sad that he didn't see her the way she saw him. Anyhow, that's the one which really sucked for me big time because I wasn't able to go home with a romantic flair in the air.
The basic thing though about movies, I would just like to add, is I could never watch horror or thriller films alone, I mean, I have to watch something light afterwards like romantic movies or comedy flicks, else I could not sleep. Hehehe..
Thanks for the topic.

I do like a happy ending in certain films like the proper girlie films like ps i love you and how to lose a guy in 10 days etc etc but i also like to have a twist in dramas as it makes it far more intresting and gives me something to discuss with my partner/ friends afterwards. Yes i get upset if something goes wrong but feel this depicts real life as not everything is all rosy.

Hi citruesmma, as for me i love shows or dramas with happy ending. Its most probably because i will feel happy when i see a happy ending especially when the main actor and main actress gets together in the end. It definitely makes me feel that time is not wasted on watch the show because of the happy ending. I guess most of the people here love happy endings too! cheers

I like happy ends for movies, novels and stories.
After that, the girl lives happily with the Prince is the very end for me. Maybe perfect things are few in my life, so that i prefer happy end than others, while hoping that may be some day in the future, my life can be in a great condition.
tradegy can be easily remembered by people, and pass down from one gegeration to the next, but in real life, no one want that stay in their lives. So happy ends are welcomed in every place of the world.

Hi citrusemma!
Well, I usually want a happy ending since I tend to relate what I was watching with the things that happen in my life. I take time to reflect on the events that's why I also become too emotional sometimes if the movie is very touching. Haha. Although I think those movies with a not-so-happy ending have a certain twist that also suits my interests. Still, happy endings are better. At least in my own point of view. Hehe. Have a great day!

I love happy endings and hate when someones die or gets hurt. I feel that if it has a happy ending I can sleep better vs it having a sad ending and I have nightmares about it or think about it more than I should, Yea, hands down I would rather have a happy ending anytime. However, I know that this is not possible all the time.

That is true, maybe it's a good idea to read the synopsis or find out the ending before watching a movie then?
Thanks for responding

I'm a sucker for happy endings, but I don't want the plot to be too predictable. I don't like obvious formulas (formulae?). I do get affected by endings with the protagonists not being where I want them to be and usually end up disgusted that I'd sat through a movie that ended that way, lol.
