The Center for Union Facts is offering the nation's 10 worst teachers $10,000 to quit their jobs. It claims teachers unions are ruining education for kids by sheltering bad teachers. The National Education Assciation claims evaluation policies help weed out bad teachers. Some unions help insulate teachers from being fired.
Should we pay teachers $10,000 to quit their jobs?
Are teachers unions bad or good for education?

And how do you judge a bad teacher? By his or her students achievements? I think the whole question is questionable? Unions are their to protect their workers and safe guard their rights. If you are saying that you have bad teachers in your country, they should not be in their profession in the first place. In my country there are enought measurements that in case of a bad teacher his job would be terminated or else be shifted to a clerical job. © ronaldinu 2008

Unions are killing education in America. We spend more and get less than any other country. And unions are a major part of the problem the take money from teacher and give it to Democrats who fight to keep unions in place to do what hey do. It is a horrible system. I don't have any kids of my own but if i did I would do everything in my power to keep them out of public schools. I have met many Homeschooled and private schooled kids and they are much brighter and more well adjusted than the average Gov't. school kid. They also read and write much better too. There is no competition or accountability in gov't schools.
In answer to your question, No they should not pay these teachers to quit. They should just fire them. And parents should be screaming for them to be fired.

I must disagree with you on all points. Unions are not the problem, the problem is that the employers are not taking accountability for the people they are hiring. Undoubtably there are agreements between the school system AND the union, yep, it is something they agree on together. My guess would be that the school system is not following the guidelines put forth by the school system AND the Union and THAT is when "bad" teachers will be able to keep their jobs.
As for home/private school kids -vs- public school kids: My husband has a 6th grader in a private school and we have a 3rd grader in public school. The 3rd grader is at the same level in math as the 6th grader. He not only reads BETTER, he also has better reading comprehension than the 6th grader. And, the 3rd grader does not have the opportunity to bring his grade up just by going to mass...as the 6th grader can and does.
Furthermore, it is a partnership between the schools and the parents that will make a childs education successful. The accountability that you speak of lies mostly with the parents, not the schools.
