Are Recruiters worthless to find the job?

Do you think using recruiters to find and interview the best candidates for the organizations is a waste of money and time? Or because the recruiters have not much idea about the job and have vested interests that conflict with your interest. What are your ideas. Should one prefer for going to the recruiters or you prefer to advertise your job vacancy directly in the media.?
