Hi I bought a HP Pavillion DV5-1045TX a couple of weeks ago. It's a lovely looking laptop and I know Hp is a good brand but I have had nothing but trouble with it. HP have already allowed me to return one to the store and exchange it for a new one as there were problems with the quick launch buttons among other hassles and now I am having problems playing DVDS on it. This post is not to criticize HP as I still believe they make very good machines but I cannot for the life of me obtain a good playback with DVDS. The playback is stuttered ands choppy and what makes it worse it happens at random. I have done all the obvious things like check discs and tried all sorts of different discs, cleaned them etc.. and it's always the same, it will work fine for a while and just when I get excited and think it is fixed, it happens again! It is so frustrating! It's difficult enough getting used to Vista, I don't need other problems.I have installed klcodec 425b all to no avail. Has anyone else had these problems with HP laptops?

Well, my new HP isn't a laptop, so I hope you don't mind my responding here anyway. I just got my new HP a6530f a couple of months ago. And when we first hooked it up, it read DVDs just fine. But a few days later, I tried to put in a music CD and it wouldn't read it AND it wouldn't read DVDs anymore either. We tried all the steps to fix it, and hubby opened the tower and unplugged and replugged the wires for the DVD/CD drive and it still didn't work. We haven't been able to take it in yet to find out the problem since the place we got it from is almost an hour and a half away. Fortunately I bought a 2 year warranty on the computer, so at least I know it will be fixed one way or another. I'll let you know if it gets fixed or not...if we ever make it to the store that is. Good luck with yours hon. I hope it gets fixed soon so at least some of your frustrations will ease up.

Thanks for responding. It is interesting that your machine is having problems reading discs as well. Uhmmm.. I wonder whether HP are as great as what I thought. My situation has been a drama from day one. The technician who inspected it called me this morning and said that HP have approved another replacement (again!) I think I will be pushing to replace it with a different computer altogether. This is getting stupid, I'm onto my third laptop now. The first one had to be replaced by the store because it had dents and scratches all over it, the second one launch buttons problems and now DVDS won't play! What next! I didn't think one person could be so unfortunate as to have all this trouble. Luckily I bought a 3 year warranty on mine, just as well! I'll let you know how I go. I must have a computer curse or something. Have a great day! I'll try not to fight with my laptop; maybe if I speak nicely to it....

Do not bet that HP will fix it under warranty, I have two laptops I bought 90 days ago. HP just keeps taking them back in for reapir and sending them back without being fixed.

Really? Who would have thought ants to be causing problems. I better check that as we had ants last summer in the house and I had a hard time getting rid of them. Thanks for the response, useful information.

I have a tx1003au tablet pc from HP , it had problems with the removable DVD drive it was not detecting disks , not opening files on dvd/cd etc and it was ocurring at random I updated the bios twice , with new bios for my tablet pc, i advice u not to update bios unless u are an expert , a faulty update can cost u your mother board. I have no problems after the bios update , and updating all my Vista and applications

Hi thanks for responding. I have updated the bios under HP's technical support's guidance, although I am not sure how well trained these people are because twice I have been given information that I know is incorrect. I still have this random problem and a technician has had a look at it and advised HP to replace it for me, (again!) I am considering choosing a different brand altogether now. This has been a very annoying and stressful experience as I have already exchanged it before. I'm glad yours is OK now, hope it stays that way.
