Cravings?

I went to the store yesterday just to pick up something sweet. I have really limited my sugar intake since I've been doing this low carb thing with my hubby. Yesterday, I just had a craving for a glazed donut. I went to the store and picked up a few things while on my quest for the glazed donut. By the time I found a glazed donut (the very last one) I had walked through the entire store and acquired 2 packs of cookies, 2 muffins, 1 pack of reeses peanut butter cups, a cinnamon roll. I bought all of it, along with my donut. I opened the Reeses in the car and almost gagged. It was sooo sweet. I love Reeses but after not having sugar for awhile it was like a ball of sugar! I couldn't even taste the peanut butter. I shoved that aside and decided I'd try a muffin. I ate the muffin top and quickly got a tummy ache. I left the rest of the muffin in the bag and decided I'd eat my donut in the morning if I still had a craving. Well, this morning, I ate the cinnamon roll and the donut. I was really disappointed, they didn't taste at all like I remember. I was so hoping. I threw the muffins away and I'm giving out the reeses as halloween candy. I ruined my diet for nothing. That's okay though, at least if I ever get a sugar craving again, I'll just suffer through it because now I know the taste won't be appealing to my palet. I still have 2 packs of cookies....any takers? I'm done with the sugar binge.

I have been baking lately, and that is a problem, sort of. I love home baked things. On the other hand, next to home baked, store bought is so pitiful, I just do not want it. I do go crazy over chocolate at Halloween. That is a problem.

Firstly, that's the funny thing about sweets and even salty foods. If you haven't had them for a long time and then suddenly have them again, they don't taste the same. You have to ease yourself back into eating them again before they taste like you remember. But, uh, please don't do that!! Because you're on your diet, obviously.:P
But to give some advice, and this is to anyone on a diet, to cut out the food you love completely--chocolate, candy, potato chips, etc.--is just asking for trouble. If you deprive yourself completely you're more likely to go binge. However, if you wean yourself slowly and have maybe even just one or two 'treats' a week, I think you'd be more likely to not stray from your diet. Think of it as a reward for keeping on your diet. Like with my fiance, she's on a diet but we still aren't afraid to have maybe a cookie or a candy bar (just one) every other day after dinner. Because let's face it, she's not going to gain back weight from one cookie. But you can definitely gain weight from having sweets withdrawals and binging on an entire box of Oreos in a moment of weakness.
Whether we're on a diet or not, we'll always have our cravings, so personally, I think it's better to feed them slowly, in small, safe doses, than to deprive them completely so that one day they'll come rearing back like a lion and make us do something we regret.
Just some food for thought.:)
