Have you ever tried out the local language?

I always learn to say 'thank you' at the very least in the local language. If it is not too difficult I try to learn a few other words. I find languages that use the same alphabet as my mother tongue language easier. Like I found Romanian easy but I found Bulgarian impossible. I am currently learning Spanish at evening classes and am keen to try out my new language skills. Do you try to master words in the local language? If so are the local people pleased? What did you think of the foreign language that you heard?

Generally when travelling, I try to learn at least a few phrases before I visit a country, and when I get there I try to pick up a few more. My husband and I have been to Russia several times. I've found the most important phrases there are thank you, may I, good morning, hello and goodbye, it is good (which is used for a variety of situations), and several others. Every time we're there we learn a bit more, and since we keep in contact with several Russian friends, I get a chance to practice between trips!

Forgot to add, it seems to me that if you at least make an effort at learning the language, most locals will appreciate it.
